James Allen “Jim” Harkey

   James Allen “Jim” Harkey, age 72, of Kingston Springs, Tennessee, passed away on June 23, 2021 at his sister’s home in Medon, TN. He was born on April 1, 1949 in Waynesboro, TN, the son of the late Allen B. and Mary Len Moore Harkey.

   Jim graduated from Frank Hughes High School in Clifton, TN in 1967. Shortly after high school Jim was drafted into the U.S. military, and in 1969 he was deployed to Danang, Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees. Upon completion of his tour of duty he rotated back to the U.S., and by 1977 Jim was a civilian again. In his post military time he began a career with the State of Tennessee. In 1987 Jim decided to get back into military service and joined the U.S. Navy Reserve. In 1990 Jim deployed to the Persian Gulf area to serve the Naval Seabee mission in Operation Desert Storm. He retired from both the State of Tennessee and the Navy Reserve by 2012.

   Jim is survived by his beloved sister, Barbara Wilburn of Medon; his beloved sister, Linda Bowling of Olive Hill; his dear brother, David Harkey of Waynesboro; his nieces Lauri Wilkerson, Nicole Wilkerson, Ann Pitts, Angela Bryant, and Shana Taylor; and his nephews Joey Wilburn and Mason Harkey.

   A graveside service was held on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery near Waynesboro, TN with Bro. Larry Kirk officiating.

   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Jim’s memory be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) ) or the Wounded Warrior Project (Veterans Charity – Non Profit Organization for Veterans | WWP (woundedwarriorproject.org).
