On Tuesday, March 18th, the combined WCHS/CHS soccer team traveled to Culleoka for a district match. The weather was excellent (unlike last year’s endless thunderstorms). Culleoka was somewhat more organized, and better at passing, controlling the ball for much of the first half. They scored a goal midway through the first half, and another just before halftime to go into the break 2-0 ahead of Wayne County. Fourteen minutes into the second half, they scored a third goal. Just three minutes later, Wayne County striker Gage Pope got through the Culleoka defensive line and scored a goal on a fast break. Both teams played solid defense for the rest of the game, leaving the score 3-1 Culleoka at the full-time whistle. Wayne County goalie Brandon Gray made 11 saves in the game.
On Thursday, March 20th, the Wayne County team hosted new school Battle Creek from Spring Hill for another district match. Battle Creek had a large team with many skilled players and dominated the game. They scored 7 goals in the first half and shut down any Wayne County offensive efforts. In the second half, they scored 2 goals to win 9-0. Brandon made 15 saves during the game.
Wayne County schools are on Spring Break this week. Games restart next Monday with a 6:00 PM away game at Marshall County and Thursday with a home game at 6:00 PM with Loretto. The following week they travel to Richland and Loretto. Come out and support Wayne County soccer!---Submitted by Harvey Baker
