The Wayne County High School Wildcats and Lady Cats both won their opening contests in mercy rule fashion against the Bruceton/Hollowrock Central Tigers and Lady Tigers on Friday night. The Lady Cats will face McKenzie on Monday night, with the 'Cats going up against Perry County on Tuesday. Girls' finals will be Wednesday at 7:00 with the boys’ finals being Thursday at 7:00.
The Lady Cats got off to a good start against the Lady Tigers, leading, 20 – 7 at the end of the first quarter. They went on to take a 47 - 14 lead by the half. In the second half, they turned the game over to the reserves, as all Lady Cat squad members got to play. They won the game 62 – 23, forcing 17 turnovers on 12 steals, scoring 19 points off turnovers. Blair Baugus led the way with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 7 steals, and 2 assists. Emma Bryant had 12 points with 2 boards and 6 assists. Ava Ashley hit for 11 points and had 8 rebounds, 5 blocks, 2 steals, and an assist. Freshman Shylynn Smith hit a three and had an assist. Lou Prater had 3 points with 2 rebounds, a steal, and 4 assists. Kate Brison, Kaybree Carroll, Presley Daniel, Carleigh Labombard, and Mary-Grace Littleton each scored 2 points. Brison and Carroll each had a rebound, while Daniel had 2 boards and 2 assists. Labombard and Littleton each had 2 boards with Littleton picking up a steal. Kinsley Miller had 3 rebounds and a steal. Adaline Odle had a rebound and 3 assists. Izzie Scaife had 3 boards, and Emma Green had 1. The Lady Cats held the Lady Tigers at 13% shooting on the night.
The Wildcats turned up the pressure against the Tigers, forcing 13 first half turnovers, to lead 41 – 13 at the half.
They turned the “running clock” game over to the bench in the second half to advance to the semi-final round, 63- 32.
Cayman Camfield and Justice Bell led the scoring with 14 points each. Camfield claimed a double-double with 14 boards and had 3 steals and 2 assists. Bell had 4 boards with 2 steals and 3 assists. Case Butler had 7 points off the bench with 8 rebounds. Logan Davis, Will Robertson, and Sayler Skelton each scored 6 points. Davis had a steal and 3 assists; Robertson had a rebound and 2 assists, and Skelton had 4 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Isaac Hampton, Nate Bevis, and Kace Bryant each scored 3 points. Hampton had 2 rebounds and an assist. Bevis had 2 boards, while Bryant had a rebound and an assist. Warren Camfield had 1 point with 4 boards and an assist. Lawson Stegall had a block. The 'Cats had a bad shooting night, shooting 39% from the field and 40.7% from the foul line.
