The Wayne County High School basketball teams took wins over Hampshire last Monday night at WCHS. They began a five-game series of away games on Tuesday night as they traveled to Decatur/Riverside. The Ladycats came away with their second win in two days, while the ‘Cats went cold in the fourth quarter and lost to the Panthers. Following trips to Lewis County and Mt. Pleasant, the teams continue on the road this week as they play at Richland on Friday. Tuesday night is an open date. The Wildcats are now 2 – 2 on the year, while the Ladycats stand at 2 – 1.
Against the Lady Hawks from Hampshire, the Ladycats came out and took a 19 – 6 lead at the end of the first period. They upped the lead to 32 – 14 by the half, en route to a 49 – 30 win. Sophomore Michaela Gallian led the Ladycats with 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field. She recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and blocked a shot. Savanna McClain and Lauren Bryant each score 8 points. McClain had 3 boards and 2 steals, while Bryant had a rebound, 2 steals, and an assist. Kelley Baugus had 6 points and 6 rebounds with an assist. Cambree Camfield had 5 points, a rebound, and a steal, and Henley Floyd added a three-pointer and had a rebound and an assist. Charli Woodside had 2 points. Lexie Lee had a steal, and Alexis Maghielse had a rebound and 2 steals. The Ladycats shot 17% from long range and 58.1% from two. They forced 15 Hampshire turnovers.
Against the Hawks, the Wildcats got off to a slow start on offense, scoring only 5 points in the first quarter, but the defense limited Hampshire to only 2. In the second quarter, the Wildcats put up 18 points while the Hawks managed only 5, to take a 23 – 7 halftime lead. Hampshire cut into the lead in the third, but the Wildcats went on to take the win, 48 – 35.
Clay Baugus scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats. He had 6 rebounds, a steal, and 2 assists. Wyatt Kelley scored 9 points and had 3 rebounds with a steal and an assist. Adam Goss and Cade Crews each had 6 points. Goss had 3 boards and an assist, while Crews had 8 rebounds with an assist. Eli McClain, Tyler Moser, and Austin Whitson each had 2 points. Moser had a team high 9 rebounds, with a block and 3 assists. McClain had a rebound and a steal, and Whitson had 5 rebounds. The Wildcats shot 42% from the field, and outrebounded the Hawks, 35 – 24.
At Decatur/Riverside on Tuesday, the Ladycats led 9 – 5 at the end of the first period. They went on to up the lead to 23 – 13 by halftime. They were never challenged in the second half, coming away with a 20 point win, 53 – 33.
Kelley Baugus hit for 16 points to lead the Ladycats. She had 3 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Lexie Lee and Cambree Camfield each scored 9 points. Lee had 3 boards and a steal, while Camfield had 3 boards, a steal, and 2 assists. Freshman Lauren Bryant scored 8 points and had a team high 4 assists. She also had a rebound and a steal. Michaela Gallian had 4 points, 3 rebounds, and a steal, and Henley Floyd had 3 points with a rebound and a steal. Kelsey Carroll and Celia Powell each scored 2 points. Carroll had a rebound. Savanna McClain had 3 rebounds and 2 steals, and Charli Woodside had a rebound. The Ladycats hit 10 of 12 free throws in the game for 83.3% and forced 22 Decatur turnovers.
The Wildcats came out and took a 17 – 15 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 31 – 21 by halftime. In the third, they increased the lead to 44 – 33, but in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats couldn’t score as Decatur went on a 20 – 5 run, aided by four turnovers in the final 2 minutes, to down the Wildcats 53 – 49.
Clay Baugus scored 27 points, all coming in the first three quarters. He had 6 rebounds with 3 steals and 4 assists. Tyler Moser had 6 points and 2 rebounds. Wyatt Kelley and Cade Crews each scored 5 points. Kelley had 4 boards, and Crews had 2 rebounds with an assist. Adam Goss had 4 points with 5 rebounds and an assist. Gaynes Keaton scored 2 points and had a rebound. Ethan Camfield had a rebound and an assist, and Eli McClain had 2 boards and an assist. The Wildcats had 14 turnovers, several of which were in the final quarter of action. Decatur was 8 of 15 from long range in the game.
