Wayne County Technology Center hosted a Career Day event on Friday, April 5th. The event was held in the Green River Baptist Church gymnasium, and the gym was full of different tables for local business representatives. Technology Center Director Dr. Lisa Thompson confirmed that 36 businesses were represented, mostly from Wayne County, but also from a few surrounding counties.

The purpose of the event was to show young people that there are career opportunities close to home. WCTC students from Wayne County High School, Frank Hughes High School, and Collinwood High School were given the opportunity to visit different tables for businesses they found interesting. Among the businesses represented were healthcare (physician’s offices, home health), emergency response (police, EMTs, volunteer firefighters, forestry), insurance agencies, banks, the local newspaper, and many more. Students asked questions and gained a better understanding of the different career opportunities that would allow them to stay close to home. Some of the students said that they already had career plans after high school that would take them away from Wayne County, but many of the students said that they wanted to stay in Wayne County after their high school, college, or trade school education.

Career opportunities are truly endless for young people in this day and age. Anyone may now communicate and take care of business digitally without ever leaving the comfort of home, if they so choose. Opportunities to travel and see the world outside of Wayne County are certainly still possible as well.

The young people who attended Career Day and all of Wayne County’s high school students are truly fortunate to have teachers who help and mentor them. Events like this one are another way to help prepare these students for a future career.
