The Wayne County School Board met in special session on Tuesday, July 21st, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. in the Central Office Board Room. Board members present included Chairman Andy Yarbrough, Barry Hanback, Sherman Martin, Charity Horton, and Pat Brown. Superintendent Marlon Davis was present at the meeting as well. School Board members Dwight Bumphus and Greg Eaton were absent.
Chairman Yarbrough called the meeting to order, and invited those in attendance to participate in a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance.
The first items on the agenda included adoption of the consent items, minutes of the June meeting, and the June ledger of accounts. Barry Hanback made a motion to approve. The motion was seconded by Sherman Martin, and was passed unanimously.
The first item under new business was the presentation of bids for classroom renovations at Waynesboro Middle School. Superintendent Davis presented the only bid received, which was from Richland Industries in the amount of $63,262.00, and recommended that the bid be accepted. Barry Hanback inquired about the timeline of the renovations and whether it would interfere with school. Superintendent Davis said that some interruptions could happen, but every effort would be made to minimize them. Sherman Martin made a motion to accept the bid from Richland Industries, and Charity Horton seconded the motion. The bid was unanimously approved on roll call vote.
The final item of business on the agenda was the framework/protocol for the re-opening of schools. Superintendent Davis presented the re-opening framework, stating that it had been created with the combined efforts of principals, assistant principals, health providers, supervisors, and parents. He outlined the different phases of the plan, and asked the school board members to give any feedback they felt necessary. Chairman Yarbrough suggested that water fountains be disabled at the schools, and to only use the water bottle filling stations. Charity Horton asked about the possibility of putting nurses in the high schools, and Superintendent Davis said that he would check into the cost for that. Chairman Yarbrough also stressed the importance of parents making sure that students are not sick before they leave home to go to school.
Following a lengthy discussion concerning topics such as touchless thermometers and distance learning, Sherman Martin made a motion to approve the re-opening plan including the language concerning water fountains. Barry Hanback seconded the motion, and it was passed unanimously on roll call vote.
With no further business to come before the board, Barry Hanback made a motion to adjourn. Sherman Martin seconded the motion, and the meeting was adjourned.
