Those recently traveling on the Highway 64 Bypass as it intersects Dexter L. Woods Memorial Boulevard in Waynesboro have undoubtedly noticed the new arrow signs installed along the roadway last week by the State of Tennessee. A large number of accidents have taken place in that very spot, including some with injuries. The most recent accident there took place a few weeks ago when an 18-wheeler failed to negotiate the curve and turned on its side as it left the roadway.
The Waynesboro City Commission has discussed the problem several times and explored options to rectify the situation, but since the Bypass is a state highway, the city’s hands were essentially tied as far as being able to do anything themselves. Waynesboro City Manager John Hickman contacted the State Highway Department following the most recent meeting of the Waynesboro City Commission and told them that urgent measures were needed to make the roadway safer at the site of the frequent accidents.
Within days, the state came and installed the reflective arrow signs pictured above to make it easier for drivers to notice the curve in the roadway. Waynesboro City Commissioners are hopeful that the signs will serve their intended purpose of reducing accidents at the site.
