The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce held their annual Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 2nd, 2023 at the Auxiliary Gymnasium in Clifton. The theme for this year’s event was “A Night in the 70’s,” and attendees were dressed in their grooviest duds. The evening was truly far out, man!

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christine Chapman emceed the event. The winner of this year’s Memorial Recognition Award was the late Mr. Herbert Brewer, a true Wayne County icon. The following was read by Christine in honor of Mr. Herbert:

“We have lost some great men and women in our community this year. Tonight, we are honoring one of those who made an incredible impact on Wayne County over the years. Mr. Herbert Brewer…our friend, neighbor, church member, my lunch buddy, and last but most important, father.

“Herbert served as a Wayne County Commissioner for over 35 years. He was not only dedicated to public service, but he was also known for his love and commitment to his family and friends. His long tenure as a commissioner speaks to his passion for making a positive impact in his community. During his time in office, he worked tirelessly to address the needs and concerns of Wayne County residents, always striving to make a difference in their lives. As a loving husband and father, he undoubtedly brought that same level of dedication and care to his relationships. Herbert’s legacy will be remembered for his contributions to his community and the love and support he provided to his loved ones.

“Herbert’s dedication to serving and improving the lives of others extended beyond his professional life. He was known for his kindness and approachability, making him someone who never met a stranger. This quality likely played a significant role in his ability to connect with and understand the needs of the individuals he cared for at the Boyd Cottages Assisted Living facility.

“Herbert, along with his wife Lillie’s, commitment to providing quality care for those in need is evident in the establishment of the assisted living facility. Boyd Cottages is a testament to his vision and desire to create a safe and comfortable environment for elderly individuals who require assistance with daily activities. By creating this facility, Brewer and his team provided a place where residents could receive the care they needed while maintaining their independence and dignity.

“It’s important to remember and recognize individuals like Herbert Brewer, who have dedicated their lives to making a positive impact on their communities. Their efforts can have far-reaching effects, not only on the individuals they directly serve but also on the community. It is through their compassion, determination, and commitment that lasting changes can be made, improving the quality of life for everyone involved.

“As we reflect on Herbert’s achievements, let us be inspired by his example and strive to make a difference in our communities. Whether it’s through acts of kindness, volunteering, or supporting causes that are dear to our hearts, we all have the power to contribute positively to the lives of others. Let us carry forward the legacy of individuals like him, ensuring that their impact continues to be felt long into the future.”

Other winners of the evening were: Organization of the Year, Clifton Senior Citizens; Non-Profit of the Year, Ladies in Pink Society; Business of the Year, Pillow Street Bed and Breakfast; Lifetime Achievement Award, Michael Francis; Volunteers of the Year, the McDonald Family, John, Sherry, Colby, and Tyler; and Person of the Year, Autry Gobbell.
