Founded in 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama, Civitan International has more than 30,000 worldwide. Civitan International’s flagship project is the Civitan International Research Center (CIRC)—a cutting edge research facility dedicated to the study and treatment of developmental disabilities like autism, Rett syndrome and disorders of the brain.

Civitan is the only service organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This long-standing focus began as a local project in Baltimore in the 1940s when Civitan began funding specialized teachers in schools. In 1956, Civitan membership unanimously adopted service to I/DD as the major project focus of the international organization. Today, Civitan supports the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Alabama where more than 100 researchers work on diseases that impact the lives of 1 in 6 people worldwide.

Civitan’s Candy Box Program is one of Civitan’s oldest and most well-known fundraising programs, which supports hundreds of international and local charity projects, and helps thousands of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Candy Boxes are located locally at Dad’s Pizzeria, Wayne County Bank, Momma’s Kitchen, CapStar-Barlow, and at County Clerk Stan Horton’s Office. If any business would let us place a Candy Box, please call 931-722-8110 or 931-242-0547.

Our local projects directly benefit local communities and Buffalo River Services, a local organization dedicated to serve those with I/DD.  We try to make sure these persons are shown love and remembered as well as involved in our communities.

Our main fundraisers include our Bobby Brown Vidalia Onion Sale beginning mid-April and then in the fall we have a Cookie Dough Sale. Contact any member to order.

Membership in Civitan is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old and of good character. If you would like to speak with someone about joining Civitan, email us at [email protected], or call us at 1-800-CIVITAN or you may contact any local member, we would love to have you. You do not have to join our local club to participate. Our Wayne County Civitan members are Phil Garner (charter member) Marla Beavers (current President), Matthew Lineberry, Judy Mayberry, Patricia Pigg, Sherry Daniel, Nikki Daniel, Kerry Hite, June Steele, and Angie Butler.

For more information, please contact Club President Marla Beavers 931-722-8110 or any member.  Wayne County Civitan meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon at Dad’s in Waynesboro.—Submitted by the Wayne County Civitan Club
