Small Business Saturday is an annual holiday that celebrates small business and encourages consumers to shop locally at the start of the holiday shopping season. It is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses in communities across the country. Founded by American Express in 2010, this annual holiday falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Because this weekend starts the holiday shopping season, by placing Small Business Saturday on this weekend helps to ensures that consumers keep local businesses in mind as they buy gifts.

The holiday aids small businesses by drawing attention to their importance in our community’s economy. It also helps customers who seek access to unique products and experiences. As a consumer, you’re a key part in helping small businesses thrive. By shopping or dining at small businesses in your community, you’re showing support. This year Small Business Saturday is on November 28, 2020.

For the past several years, the Waynesboro Downtown Committee has promoted this event by having various holiday activities taking place throughout the town. Due to COVID-19, the committee decided to support our community’s small, locally-owned businesses with a “Snowman Scavenger Hunt.”

Therefore, on Small Business Saturday, the Waynesboro Downtown Committee will be sponsoring a Snowman Scavenger Hunt. While shopping, look for the unique snowman in the participating downtown square businesses and businesses scattered around town within the city limits. Collect three or more snowman tickets from three different businesses to be eligible for a Holiday Gift Basket drawing as a “Thank You” for supporting your locally-owned, hometown, Mom & Pop Shops! There will be five gift baskets given away.

HOW IT WORKS: (1) When you make a purchase from one of the participating businesses, locate that merchant’s snowman and obtain a snowman ticket. (2) While checking out, have the employee write the purchase amount, the date, and initial the back of the ticket. (3) After collecting three snowman tickets, stop by the city hall lobby and drop them into the snowman box during normal business hours beginning Monday, November 30 through Wednesday, December 2. The drawing will be Thursday, December 3 with all winners being announced Friday, December 4.

A successful Small Business Saturday starts with you, the consumer! The Downtown Waynesboro Committee would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to take part in the “Snowman Scavenger Hunt” and support our local Mom & Pop shops on November 28, 2020. Small businesses are the heart of our local economy. Keep them going strong by shopping local, eating local, spending local and enjoying local!—Submitted
