WCHS basketball had a non-productive week as both the Ladycats and Wildcats dropped their games against the teams from Collinwood and Perry County in District 12-1A action. The teams will be on the road for the next couple of weeks. Following a trip to Loretto on Tuesday, they will go to Clifton on Friday and Summertown next Tuesday. The Ladycats stand at 9 – 6 on the year and 1 -3 in the district. The Wildcats are now 3 – 13 and 0 – 4 in district action.
On Tuesday night, the Ladycats took an 11 – 10 lead at the end of the first period, but saw the Lady Trojans go on a 15 – 4 run to begin the second quarter and put up 23 points in that frame, to fall behind 33 – 21 by halftime. In the third quarter, freshman Lauren Bryant came off the bench to help the Ladycats on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Bryant hit for 10 third quarter points as the Ladycats fought back to tie the contest at 38 all. Collinwood hit their second buzzer-beater of the game at the end of three to go up 42 – 38. In the fourth, the Ladycats fought hard down the stretch, cutting the lead to 51 – 48 with a minute left as Kelley Baugus found Michaela Gallian for a basket. The defense came up with the ball a few seconds later but turned it over. Collinwood went to the line, hitting 2 free throws to up the margin to 53 – 48. Again the Ladycats were unable to score and fouled. This time the Lady Trojans made one of two from the line, upping the margin to 54 – 48. A desperation 3 from Lauren Bryant with 3.9 seconds cut the final margin to 54 – 51.
Michaela Gallian and Lauren Bryant finished the game with 17 and 15 points respectively to lead the Ladycats. Gallian had 6 rebounds and a block, while Bryant had a rebound, a steal, and an assist. Savanna McClain added 5 points and had 3 rebounds, a block, and 2 assists. Lexie Lee and Kelley Baugus each scored 4 points. Lee had 3 boards, a block, and an assist, while Baugus had 2 rebounds, 4 steals, and 7 assists. Cambree Camfield and Henley Floyd each scored 3 points. Camfield had 4 rebounds, and Floyd had one. Charli Woodside had a rebound and 2 assists. The Ladycats shot only 36% from the field and had 14 turnovers.
The Wildcats came out against the Trojans and took a 12 – 10 first quarter lead as Clay Baugus hit for 8 points in the first. They led 31 – 28 by the half, but saw the lead change hands in the third as Collinwood hit for 21 in the quarter, and the ‘Cats trailed by double digits, 49 – 39. In the fourth, the deficit grew, as they lost by the final score of 73 – 55.
Clay Baugus finished the night with 28 points. He had 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Wyatt Kelley hit for double figures with 11 points and had 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Tyler Moser scored 5 points and had 13 rebounds. Ethan Camfield had 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Cade Crews had 3 rebounds and a block. Adam Goss had 3 rebounds, a block, and a steal, and Gaynes Keaton had 2 boards, and Austin Whitson had one. The Wildcats suffered from 21 turnovers and had only 2 assists in the game.
The Ladycats took a 15 – 12 first quarter lead against the Lady Vikings of Perry County as Michaela Gallian scored 9 first quarter points. In the second, Perry County fought back, making the margin 2, 25 – 23 at the half. In the third, the Lady Vikings took the lead, as the Ladycats managed only 9 points. A steal and basket by Kelley Baugus with 1:13 left tied the game at 52 all, but Perry County went to the line and nailed 2 free throws. Michaela Gallian hit a basket at the 42 second mark to tie it again at 54 all. The Lady Vikings were gold at the line, hitting11 of 12 free throws in the fourth. The Ladycats had a pair of turnovers in the last minute. Kelley Baugus hit a basket to make it 56 all with only seconds left, hopefully to send the game into overtime. Perry County took the ball down and drew another foul with 2.6 seconds on the clock, went to the line, and made one of two. Michaela Gallian got the miss, threw the ball to half court, and the Ladycats got a timeout to set up the final shot with .6 seconds left. The shot was no good, and the Ladycats fell 57 – 56.
Gallian led the scoring with 15 points, with Savanna McClain and Lauren Bryant hitting for 13 and 12 respectively. Gallian had 4 rebounds and a steal. McClain had 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and an assist while Bryant had 2 rebounds, a steal, and 3 assists. Kelley Baugus finished with 8 points and had 2 rebounds, a steal, and 2 assists. Lexie Lee and Cambree Camfield each scored 4 points. Camfield had a steal, and Lee had 3 boards. Henley Floyd had 3 boards, a steal, and an assist, and Charlie Woodside had a rebound and a steal. The Ladycats shot 10% from 3 on 2 of 20 and turned the ball over 17 times. They were 12 of 15 from the foul line for 80%.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 31 – 28 halftime lead, but saw the third quarter go bad, scoring only 8 points in the period while giving up 21 to the Vikings. They trailed 49 – 39 by the end of three and fell by the final score of 73 – 55. Clay Baugus had a big game, hitting for 29 points. He had 7 rebounds, a steal, and 3 assists. Tyler Moser scored 12 points and had 8 boards and a steal. Wyatt Kelley hit for 4 points with 2 rebounds and an assist, and Cade Crews and Ethan Camfield each hit a 3 in the final quarter. Crews had 4 rebounds, a steal, and an assist, while Camfield had a steal and an assist. Braxton Butler and Adam Goss each scored 2 points. Goss had 3 rebounds and a steal. Austin Whitson had 2 rebounds. The ‘Cats were out rebounded 35 – 26 and only shot 37% from the field. Perry County was 19 of 21 from the foul line for 90.5%.
