WCHS Golf Team Makes School History

Posted

The Wayne County High School golf team made history this season, capturing the Region Championship and earning a spot in the TSSAA State Golf Tournament for the first time in 21 years. The Wildcats made the most of the opportunity, finishing 4th overall—the best result in school history.

It was no small feat, as WCHS was the only Class 1A team competing against larger 2A and 3A schools in the eight-team field.

The team traveled to Sevierville on Tuesday with a community sendoff that included students, faculty, and local businesses showing their support. On Wednesday, the players got their first look at the demanding 8-mile course during a practice round.

Thursday morning brought crisp, chilly conditions, but the Wildcats rose to the challenge. The team posted a 318 in the opening round, good for third place and just five strokes shy of second. Brady Stooksberry and Jacan Floyd led the way with rounds of 77, while Cayman Camfield and Lawson Stegall each carded 82. Warren Camfield added an 89.

Friday proved more difficult, with the Wildcats finishing with a 336. Their two-day total secured a 4th place overall finish, the best in school history. Along the way, individual players made their mark: Cayman Camfield placed in the top 15 for Par 3 scoring with a 3.125 average, while Brady Stooksberry earned a spot on the top 15 Birdie list with four.

For the players, the run to state was more than just golf—it was about leaving their mark.

“This is something I’ll never forget,” said senior Brady Stooksberry. “To be part of the team that finally broke through and set a new standard for WCHS golf is really special. We wanted to show we belonged, and I think we did that.”

Sophomore Jacan Floyd, who was the team's overall low scorer with 161, said the experience was a motivator. “Being part of this team showed me what hard work and teamwork really mean. These are memories I will never forget.”

Senior Cayman Camfield, who earned a top 15 spot in Par 3 scoring, praised the team’s grit. “As a senior, going out with this finish means everything. We faced some tough teams, but nobody gave in. I’m proud to know we’ve left the program in a better place than when we started.”

Sophomore Lawson Stegall said he’ll remember the way the team supported each other. “Even when one of us had a bad hole, somebody else was there to lift us up. That’s what made this team different—we always had each other’s backs.”

Senior Warren Camfield said “Getting to finish my senior year at state was unforgettable. I’m so proud we got to make history together.”

Head Coach Chris Lynch praised his team’s season, both on and off the course. “It’s hard to put into words what this season meant. Proud doesn’t even begin to describe it. Beyond the scores and trophies, what stands out most is how they carried themselves. They always picked each other up—no matter the situation—and they never let one another fall behind. That’s what true teamwork looks like.”

The Wildcats closed the year with a remarkable record: 31-2-1 in the regular season and 18-3 in postseason play, for an overall mark of 49-5-1.

This season will be remembered as the one that redefined WCHS golf. With a region title, a state appearance, and the best finish in school history, the Wildcats proved that determination and teamwork can take them to new heights.
