The Salvation Army will launch its annual Kettle Campaign on Friday, November 28, 2025, at Piggly Wiggly in Waynesboro. The campaign will continue there every Friday and Saturday through December 20.
In Collinwood, the kettle will be available for one day only on Tuesday, December 2, at Piggly Wiggly in Collinwood. The Collinwood High School Student Council will volunteer to staff the kettle during this special day.
A brief history of the kettle:
The tradition of the Salvation Army’s red kettle dates back to 1891, when Captain Joseph McFee sought a way to provide meals for the hungry in San Francisco. With no funds available, he recalled a pot used to collect donations and envisioned placing one on a tripod to gather contributions. That simple idea grew into a powerful symbol of hope.
Over the years, the kettle has come to represent far more than one meal. Donations now support a wide range of services for those in need – food, clothing, housing, disaster relief, and much more. Today, kettles are used in over 130 countries to help meet the needs of the less fortunate.
Local campaign details:
• Waynesboro: Kettle begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 28, and continues every Friday and Saturday through December 20.
• Collinwood: Kettle available one day only on Tuesday, December 2, staffed by Collinwood High School Student Council.
As you enter or leave Piggly Wiggly, consider dropping your spare change – or any donations – into the kettle. No gift is too small or too large.
This effort is managed locally by the Lawrence and Wayne County Salvation Army Service Unit, ensuring that contributions directly support neighbors in need.
