This week’s featured photo was submitted by Collinwood “photographer extraordinaire” Peggy Chambers. Peggy says the pretty flower in her photo is Ironweed, scientifically known as Vernonia, and is a fascinating group of plants. They’re native to North America and are especially beloved by pollinators like butterflies and bees.
Their late-season blooms provide a crucial nectar source when many other flowers have faded. There are many different species, but they all share those distinctive purplish-red, often shaggy-looking flowers. They’re also quite hardy and can grow in various conditions.
Thank you to Peggy for sharing another one of her “Sunday afternoon walk” photos!
