Fire on Morrow St. Results in Total Loss of Home, Possessions

Posted

A residential fire on Sunday resulted in the total loss of a Waynesboro lady’s home and possessions.

Officials say that at approximately 7:18 a.m. on Sunday, August 31, the first call came in regarding a fire at 118 Morrow Street in Waynesboro. Waynesboro City Volunteer Fire Department was the only department that responded.

The homeowner, Katharine Heston, was reportedly at home when the fire started. She reported that she was in the house around 7:00 a.m. when she heard a popping noise. She tried to find what caused the noise and discovered the fire already in progress near the carport end of the house. Ms. Heston said she initially tried to put out the fire with a water hose but was unsuccessful in putting out the flames. Neighbors reportedly heard what they thought were explosions, but that cannot be positively confirmed.

Ms. Heston unfortunately lost her home and all her possessions in the fire, including her pets. She was, however, able to get out of the home without sustaining any injuries herself.

Waynesboro City VFD eventually had to go back to the scene at least four times after the fire was originally extinguished to put out small spot fires that kept rekindling.
