On Saturday, July 3rd, at 2:00 pm, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and the State of Tennessee Tourism industry will honor hometown singer\/songwriter\/actor Mark Collie with a permanent Music Pathways marker. The public is invited to participate in the celebration that will be held outside the courthouse near the Music Stars Pathway. At the marker reveal, hear from Collie and local elected officials about the importance of this commemoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
George Mark Collie was born in Waynesboro on January 18, 1956 and is a graduate of Wayne County High School (class of 1974). Upon graduating he moved to Memphis where his style of music (rowdy, rockabilly) attracted the attention of music publishers in Nashville. He signed a record deal with MCA records in 1982, relocating to Nashville in 1989. His first album, \u201cHardin County Line,\u201d was released in 1990. Collie\u2019s second album, \u201cBorn and Raised in Black and White,\u201d was released in 1991, with his third album \u201cMark Collie\u201d released in 1993. His most recent album, \u201cBook of my Blues,\u201d was released this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1994, Mark, being a Type 1 Diabetic, launched the \u201cRace for Diabetes Cure\u201d bringing together NASCAR drivers and country music stars. In 1996, Vanderbilt University announced the \u201cFoundation of Mark Collie Chair\u201d in Diabetes Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark has also volunteered his talents to the Department of Defense and the USO, performing for troops throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His songwriting talents have been recorded by such artists as Tim McGraw, Billy Ray Cyrus, George Jones, Garth Brooks, Martina McBride, and several others, along with his music featured in numerous major motion pictures. In 2015, Collie was inducted into the International Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
