The Friends of the Museum have approved and started a remodeling project for the Wayne County Museum. This will be a four-phase project, with the first phase being the addition of a new central heat and air system on  the main level of the museum, and change to high efficiency LED lighting on the main floor of the museum as well as the second level.

The second phase of construction will include addition of a handicapped bathroom on level two of the museum. Included in this phase will also be the addition of a heating system to this area of the museum. The third phase of this project will include the addition of a new entrance that will be accessible to handicapped visitors to this area of the museum. This new access will be from the parking area at the north corner of the building which will exit to and be accessible from the parking area behind the radio station and the Wayne Provision building. The museum will also insulate the ceiling with closed cell spray insulation. Once work on level two is completed, the volunteers anticipate using this area for new displays relevant to the history of Wayne County, and the anchor or main exhibit will be the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame.

The museum volunteers are working to get the museum building on the register of historic buildings, and hopefully during this lengthy  process, the fourth phase will begin. This will be the addition of an elevator that will connect all three levels of the museum for our museum visitors convenience. Level three of the building will be reserved for future exhibits, such as Wayne county memorabilia, exhibits on Natural Bridge, exhibits on the iron ore industry in Wayne County from Allen’s Creek to 48 Creek, and exhibits about the  history of Waynesboro, Clifton, and Collinwood.

The first phase has been completed through an energy grant made available through TVA. The funds available for the improvements and additions are limited, but the museum has been honored with a gift of $5,000 from an anonymous donor. The Wayne County Museum is a 501-3(C) not for profit corporation and all donations made to this agency are tax deductible. The museum has received many other donations the past three years to assist in the daily operation of the museum. If you would be interested in volunteering to be a part of the Friends of the Museum, or would like to join the museum in financial support, please contact Jerry Duren or any of the members of the Friends of the Museum, or  drop by the museum at 102 South Main Street and discuss your interest with one of our Friend of the Museum volunteers. The Wayne County Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10am-3pm. If you have any questions, call the museum at 931-722-2256.
