WMS Wildcats Take Win Over Summertown

   The Waynesboro Middle School Wildcats hosted the Eagles of Summertown last Thursday.  The ‘Cats were able to pull off a win, bringing their season standings to 2 wins and 1 loss. The Eagles won the toss and elected to receive the ball on the opening kickoff. Summertown received the ball on the 39-yard line from a long kick from Drew Bevis. Summertown fumbled the ball on their first offensive play, but were able to recover it. The Eagles attempted a pass play on the 2nd down, but it was picked off by Sayler Skelton. Skelton ran the ball back but was called out of bounds at the 3-yard line. On 3rd and 2, Skelton was able to get the ball into the end zone, scoring the first TD of the game. The 2-point conversion was no good. On the Eagles’ offensive possession, they were able to move the ball to the ‘Cats’ 31-yard line before turning it over on downs at the end of the quarter. 1st quarter score 6-0 ‘Cats.

   WMS scored their second TD with 6:36 left in the 2nd quarter. The drive was highlighted with a strong running game from Cayson Castleman. Skelton took the ball into the end zone with a 20-yard run. Castleman was able to score on the 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 14-0 ‘Cats. The ‘Cats and the Eagles traded offensive possessions, but the ‘Cats were unable to hold Summertown scoreless. Summertown was able to slip through the defense and scored on a long run of 75 yards. The ‘Cats were able to hold Summertown from the 2-point conversion. The half ended with a score of 14-6, ‘Cats.

   The second half proved to be a defensive battle for both teams. Despite several solid runs, a few pass attempts, and fumbled balls, neither team was able to add any points to the score in the second half. The final score was 14-6. 

   Offensively, the ‘Cats were led by Sayler Skelton with 78 yards on 13 carries to include 2 touchdowns. Cayson Castleman totaled 39 yards for 10 carries and had a 2-point conversion.  Drew Bevis had 36 yards with 9 carries, and Brady Stooksberry lost a yard with 1 carry. The ‘Cats totaled 153 yards rushing on 33 carries.

   The ‘Cats defense was led again this week by Dominic Donahue with 3 solo tackles, 3 assists, and 2 tackles for loss. Brayden Littleton had 3 solo tackles, 2 assists, and 1 tackle for loss.  Cayson Castleman had 1 solo tackle, 3 assists, 2 tackles for loss, and a pass break-up. Baker Bryant had 1 tackle, 2 assists, and 1 tackle for loss. Austin McFadden had 2 assists and 2 tackles for loss. Drew Bevis had 2 tackles, 1 assist, and a pass break-up. Daylan Van Fleet had 3 solo tackles and a pass break-up. Daniel Pike and Case Butler had a solo tackle and an assist each.  Dylan Gobbell had 2 assists. Dane Bryant and Mikayla Mynes each had an assist. Sayler Skelton had an interception with a 37-yard return. Brady Stooksberry had a pass break-up.

   The WMS vs. Mt. Pleasant game that was scheduled for this Thursday has been cancelled. The ‘Cats will travel to Perry County on Saturday for a make-up game. Kickoff time is 6:30. “Go ‘Cats!”—-Submitted
