WMS Wildcats Take Down Perry County Vikings

   On Saturday, the Waynesboro Middle School Wildcats traveled to Linden to face the Vikings for their postponed game from earlier in the season. The ‘Cats showed up ready to play and ran off with an early lead allowing for all of the ‘Cats to see some time on the field. The ‘Cats, who so far this season have not had one completed pass, allowed for five different ‘Cats to show their arms and collectively threw for 79 yards.

   On the opening kickoff, the ‘Cats received the ball on their own 30-yard line. The ‘Cats scored on a 26-yard run by Sayler Skelton. Baker Bryant added the 2-point conversion. WMS led 8-0.  The Vikings’ first offensive possession resulted in a fumbled snap on 4th down, and WMS took over on downs at mid-field. The score remained 8-0 as time expired in the 1st quarter. 

   Drew Bevis scored on an 8-yard run. The 2-point conversion was no good, and WMS led 14-0 with 7:24 left in the 2nd quarter. Perry County’s next offensive drive resulted in a fumbled snap to the punter on 4th down. The ‘Cats took over on the PC 26-yard line. Skelton was able to take a quarterback sneak up the middle for a 17-yard touchdown run. Brady Stooksberry completed a pass to Cayman Camfield in the back of the end zone for the 2-point conversion. With 2:51 left before halftime, the score was 22-0, WMS. On Perry County’s offensive possession, they turned the ball over on an intercepted pass by Brady Stooksberry. WMS started the drive on the Perry County 48-yard line. Drew Bevis connected with Skelton on a 30-yard TD pass. The extra point kick by Bevis was no good. Score was 28-0 with 42 seconds remaining the in the second quarter.  The Vikings turned the ball over on another Stooksberry interception. The ‘Cats downed the ball to run out the time on the clock in the first half. Score at halftime was 28-0, ‘Cats.

   Perry County received the ball to start the 3rd quarter, and once again, turned the ball over via a Drew Bevis interception. Bevis retuned the intercepted pass 44-yards for a touchdown. Skelton completed a pass to Camfield for the 2-point conversion. ‘Cats led 36-0 with 6:33 left in the 3rd quarter. The Vikings returned the ‘Cats kickoff 75-yards for their first score of the night. Score 36-6 with 5:21 left in the quarter. WMS recovered the Perry County on side kick at the 50-yard line to start their next drive. The ‘Cats moved the ball down field and were able to score on a 3-yard run by Dane Bryant. The extra point attempt by Bevis was no good. ‘Cats led 42-6 at the end of the 3rd quarter. 

   In the 4th, The Vikings scored on a 32-yard run to make the score 42-12 with 7:06 left in the game. On WMS’ next offensive possession, they moved the ball all the way to the PC 19-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. The drive was highlighted by two Camfield receptions. Before the game ended, Perry County scored once again and added the 2-point conversion. Final score was 42-20, WMS ‘Cats.  

   Defensively, the ‘Cats were led by Baker Bryant and Brayden Littleton. Bryant had 2 solo tackles, 3 assists, and a tackle for loss. Littleton had a solo tackle, 4 assists, and a tackle for loss.  Cayson Castleman had a solo, 3 assists, and a tackle for loss. Dane Bryant had 3 solo tackles and 1 assist. Drew Bevis had 2 solos, 2 assists, a pass break-up, and a pick-6 with a 44-yard touchdown return. Sayler Skelton had 4 solo tackles. Brady Stooksberry had 3 solos and 2 intercepted passes. Dominic Donahue had 2 assists. Nate Bevis had an assist and a tackle for loss. Mason Moore had a tackle for loss. Daylan Van Fleet, Case Butler, and Ethan Dinges had a solo tackle each. 

   The offense for the ‘Cats saw a lot of action. Sayler Skelton had 8 carries for 121 yards rushing with 2 rushing touchdowns, and had one touchdown reception for 30-yards. Cayson Castleman had 4 carries for 48 yards. Drew Bevis had 5 carries for 31 yards and completed 1 of 2 passes for a 30-yard TD. Daylan Van Fleet had 4 carries for 16 yards. Dane Bryant had 1 carry for 3 yards to include a touchdown. Dominic Donahue had 1 carry for 4 yards. Nate Bevis had 3 carries for no gain and was 1 for 1 passing for 30-yards. Cayman Camfield had 2 receptions for 49 yards.  Brady Stooksberry was 1 for 1 passing for 18 yards. Mason Moore had 1 carry for no gain. The ‘Cats had 26 carries for 218 yards with 5 touchdowns. They were 3 for 4 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown.

   The WMS ‘Cats are schedule to host Scotts Hill this Thursday for their homecoming. The homecoming ceremony will begin at 6pm and kick-off is scheduled for 6:30. Go Cats!—Submitted
