WCHS Wildcats, Lady Cats Take Wins Over Frank Hughes, Lose to Summertown

   Tuesday night found the WCHS basketball teams hosting Frank Hughes School. The Ladycats jumped out to 42 – 14 halftime lead to take the win, 83 – 27. The Wildcats struggled to get started and trailed throughout the first half. They fought back in the second to come away with the 53 – 42 win.

   The teams traveled to Summertown on Friday night. They both suffered decisive losses to the Eagles and Lady Eagles. Turnovers were the theme of the night for the WCHS teams. Following a trip to Collinwood on Tuesday night, they return home to host Perry County on Friday. Tuesday night, they remain at home, taking on Loretto.  The regular season concludes Thursday night, February 11th, as they celebrate “Senior Night” against Hampshire.

   Against the Lady Lions of Frank Hughes, Lauren Bryant again came out hot, hitting six 3 pointers. The Ladycats opened on a 16 – 0 run and went on to lead 20 – 7 at the end of the first period. They kept the pace, scoring 22 in the second, 21 in the third, and 20 in the fourth. Final score 83 – 27.

   Bryant finished with 22 points on the night. She had an assist. Michaela Gallian scored 14 points and had 3 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Savanna McClain also hit in double figures with 11 points. She had 11 rebounds, six on the offensive end, and 5 steals. Cimmie Willis came off the bench in the fourth to hit 3 three point goals for 9 points. Kelsey Carroll had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assists. Jac Keaton and Annie Lee each hit for 5 points. Keaton had a rebound, 2 steals, and 3 assists, while Lee had a rebound and 3 assists. Kenzie Griggs scored 4 points and had a steal, and Isabel Luedeke added 3 points and 3 rebounds. Jamie Lauren Hickman and Lauren Prater each scored 2 points and had one rebound apiece. Charlie Woodside had a steal and an assist. The Ladycats shot 56.7% from the field, and were 11 of 21 from long range. They won the rebounding battle, 25 – 18.

   The Wildcats came out slow against Frank Hughes in the first quarter and found themselves trailing, 13 – 8, at the end of the first quarter. In the second, Frank Hughes increased their margin and led, 30 – 21, at the half. In the third quarter, the ‘Cats turned up the defensive intensity, holding the Lions to only 6 points. With 3:56 left in the third, Ethan Camfield hit a 3 to give the ‘Cats a 32 – 30 lead. The Lions answered and went up 34 – 32.  Freshman Ryder Butler came off the bench to hit a three to put the ‘Cats back on top, 35 – 34. Frank Hughes answered to go up 36 – 35. Three pointers by Ethan Camfield and Tyler Moser put the ‘Cats on top 41 – 36 at the end of the third. The ‘Cats hit their free throws down the stretch to take the win 53 – 42.

   Tyler Moser finished the game with 19 points to lead the Wildcats. He had 6 rebounds, a steal, and 3 assists.  Ethan Camfield hit for 15 points, 11 in the fourth quarter. He had 3 three-pointers and was 6 of 7 from the free throw line, with 2 rebounds, a steal, and 3 assists. Clay Baugus also hit for double figures with 11 points. He had 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Ryder Butler and Gaynes Keaton each scored 3 points. Butler had 3 rebounds, and Keaton had a rebound and 2 steals. Austin Whitson scored 2 points and had 8 rebounds. Jesse Dixon had a rebound and an assist. 

   Friday night, the Ladycats went to work against the Lady Eagles of Summertown. The Ladycats committed 10 first quarter turnovers against the Lady Eagle press and managed to score only 2 points. They trailed 19 – 2 at the end of the first. The margin increased to 32 – 8 by the half. The mercy rule went into effect in the fourth as the Ladycats fell by the final score of 66 – 22.

   Three Ladycat players scored 5 points in the contest. Lauren Bryant, Michaela Gallian, and Savanna McClain each had 5. Bryant had a steal, while Gallian had 7 rebounds, and McClain had 3. Annie Lee had 3 points, a steal, and an assist, and Kelsey Carroll and Jamie Lauren Hickman each scored 2. Carroll also had a rebound.  Jac Keaton had 3 rebounds and 2 assists, and Charlie Woodside had an assist. The Ladycats shot 22% from the field and committed 22 turnovers in the clock shortened contest, leading to 30 Lady Eagle points off of turnovers, most coming early in the contest.

   The Wildcats came out against the Eagles, hitting three-pointers. They took a 15 – 14 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second, Summertown got on track and took at 37 – 26 lead into the half. Turnovers plagues the Wildcats as they shot the ball well, but committed 15 first half turnovers. In the third, they fought back, cutting the margin to 5, 44- 39, at the 4:59 mark of the third, but the Eagles upped the margin to double digits by the end of the quarter. The ‘Cats fell by the final score of 83 – 61, finishing with 29 turnovers on the night.

   Tyler Moser scored 19 points to lead the ‘Cats. He had 7 rebounds, a block, a steal, and 3 assists. Ethan Camfield and Clay Baugus each hit for 13 points. Camfield had 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 assists, while Baugus had 5 boards and 3 steals. Gaynes Keaton hit a pair of three-pointers for 6 points and had 4 rebounds, a steal, and 6 assists. Austin Whitson scored 4 points and had 6 rebounds, a block, a steal, and an assist. Preston Stegall hit a 3 in the fourth and had a pair of rebounds, and Dawson Willis hit two free throws. Jesse Dixon scored one point.  Eli McClain had a rebound, a block, a steal, and an assist. The Wildcats finished the contest hitting 10 of 18 shots from long range for 55.6% and 47.5% from the field, but had 29 turnovers that gave the Eagles 37 points off those turnovers. They were out rebounded 35 – 27.

   The Ladycats are now 8 – 5 on the COVID shortened season, while the ‘Cats stand at 5 – 8. District play continues to sort out the standings and tournament bracket placement. “GOOD LUCK ‘CATS AND LADYCATS!”—Submitted
