WCHS Wildcats and Lady Cats Play in Pensacola, FL Holiday Tourney

The WCHS basketball teams spent last week in Pensacola, Florida, participating in a holiday event.  The Lady cats found little competition as they cruised through their 3 games.  The Wildcats found stronger competition, winning their first game and then dropping their next two.  With the wins, the Lady cats are now 15 – 3 on the year.  The Wildcats now stand at 8 – 7.  District basketball action will crank up this week as Richland comes to Waynesboro on Friday night.

The Lady cats matched up with Sillman from Louisiana in the first contest. The Lady cats jumped out to a 21 – 8 first quarter lead in route to a 61 – 41 win.  Blair Baugus hit for 24 points.  She was 11 of 13 from the field  with 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.  Savanna McClain scored 11 points and had 8 rebounds, a steal, and 2 assists.  Lauren Bryant hit for 10 points with 4 boards, a steal, and 2 assists.  Michaela Gallian had 6 points, a rebound, a steal, and 2 assists, and Cambree Camfield had 5 points with 3 rebounds, a block, and 2 assists.  Jac Keaton had 3 points, a rebound, a steal, and 2 assists, and Isabel Luedeke had 2 points with a rebound.  Kenzie Griggs had a block and 2 assists.  Jamie Lauren Hickman had a rebound, and Annie Lee had a rebound and 2 steals.  Lauren Prater had a rebound.  The Ladycats forced 23 turnovers in the contest.

The second day in Florida, the Lady cats matched up with Gellico from Tennessee.  Again, the Lady cats dominated defensively, allowing only 11 points in the contest and taking the 69 – 11 win.  Lauren Bryant and Savanna McClain each scored 10 points to lead the Lady cats.  Bryant had 5 steals and 2 assists, while McClain had 4 rebounds and 2 steals.  Blair Baugus had 9 points with 8 boards, a steal, and an assist.  Jac Keaton had 8 points with a rebound, 2 steals, and an assist.  Lauren Prater had 7 points with 3 steals.  Emma Bryant had 6 points with a steal, and Kenzie Griggs  and Michaela Gallian each had 5 points.  Griggs had 3 boards and 3 steals, while Gallian had 5 rebounds and a steal.  Annie Lee had 3 points, a rebound, and a steal.  Cambree Camfield, Kylee Brewer, and  Isabel Luedeke  each scored 2 points.  Camfield had 2 rebounds and 3 steals, while Brewer had a rebound and an assist.  Luedeke had 3 boards and an assist.  Jamie Lauren Hickman had 3 rebounds and a steal, and Lauren Prater had a rebound and a steal.  The Ladycats forced 33 Gellico turnovers.

The third game saw the Lady cats match up with Sillman from Louisiana again.  The results were the same as the Lady cats jumped out to a 30 – 13 halftime lead and went on to take the 56 – 35 win.  Blair Baugus had another big game with 23 points.  She pulled 14 rebounds, blocked 3 shots, and had 3 steals and an assist.  Lauren Bryant scored 14 points and had 2 steals and 2 assists.  Savanna McClain hit for 8 points with 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and an assist.  Michaela Gallian had 4 points with a rebound, 2 steals, and an assist.  Jac Keaton scored 3 points with a block, a steal, and 2 assists.  Kenzie Griggs and Kylee Brewer each had 2 points.  Griggs had 2 rebounds and a steal. Emma Bryant had a steal, and Cambree Camfield had a rebound, a steal, and an assist.  Annie Lee had 2 rebounds and 2 assists.  Isabel Luedeke had 2 rebounds.  Jamie Lauren Hickman had an assist.  Lauren Prater had a rebound and a steal.  The Lady cats came up with 16 steals but hit 0 for 10 from long range.

The Wildcats took on Sillman from Louisiana on Monday in Florida.  The Wildcats went out to a 25 – 5 first quarter lead and extended it to 38 – 15 by halftime.  They won the battle of the boards, 49 – 15, and won by the final score of 67 – 30.  Tyler Moser had a big game with 28 points.  He was 11 of 19 from the field with 11 rebounds, a steal, and an assist.  Preston Stegall came off the bench to hit 3 three pointers for 9 points and had 2 rebounds and an assist.  Justice Bell scored 7 points and had 8 rebounds, and Ethan Camfield and Cooper Shamer each scored 5 points.  Camfield had 8 boards, and Shamer had 4 boards, 4 steals, and 4 assists.  Avery Wilson and Landyn Prater each scored 3 points, and Wilson had 2 rebounds.  Prater had a rebound, a steal, and an assist.  Ryder Butler, Sayler Skelton, and Jesse Dixon  each scored 2 points.  Butler had 5 rebounds and 3 assists, while Skelton had 3 boards.  Dixon had 2 rebounds and a steal.  Will Robertson scored one point, and Isaac Hampton had a rebound.  Austin Whitson had 2 rebounds. 

On Tuesday, the Wildcats faced AIB. The Wildcat offense got off to a slow start, scoring only 4 points in the opening quarter. They trailed 25 – 19 at the half and went on to lose by the final score of 57 – 45.

Tyler Moser scored 23 points on 8 of 18 shooting.  He had 9 rebounds and 3 assists.  Ethan Camfield scored 16 points, including hitting 5 three-point goals.  He had 3 boards and a steal.  Ryder Butler and Eli McClain each scored 3 points.  Butler had a rebound.  Justice Bell and Landyn Prater each had a rebound and an assist.  Jesse Dixon had a rebound, ad Cooper Shamer had 2 boards and 3 assists.  Sayler Skelton had 5 rebounds. 

On the last day, the Wildcats matched up with Pickett County from Tennessee.  The Wildcats managed 12 points in the opening quarter, as Tyler Moser scored 11 of those.  In the second, they managed only 3 points.  The third period saw the Wildcats score 4.  They finished the game with 8 points in the fourth and 28 for the game, losing to Pickett County.  Tyler Moser finished with 15 points.  Justice Bell scored 4.  Ryder Butler had 3 points, and Will Robertson and Landyn Prater each scored 2.  Cooper Shamer and Eli McClain had one point each.  (Stats unavailable for this game).

Come out Friday as the teams face the Raiders and Lady Raiders from Richland.  Game time is 6:00 p.m.  “WORK HARD ‘CATS AND LADY CATS!”
