On July 20th, 2021, Jamie Ray Burns, age 36, of Waynesboro, allegedly got into a verbal altercation with Alyssa Martin and Brittnay Juarez in the Quik Mart parking lot. The three then went to Colonial Apartments, in separate vehicles. Upon their arrival at Colonial Apartments, the verbal altercation allegedly escalated and Elijah Drumwright became involved as well.

At some point during the verbal altercation, Burns went into an apartment and retrieved from a closet a Mossberg .22 pistol that had been modified to a short barrel rifle. He then allegedly proceeded to return to the parking lot where Martin, Juarez, and Drumwright were located. Burns allegedly admitted to officers when he was arrested that he had pointed the gun and Martin, Juarez, and Drumwright. Burns allegedly fired the gun five times at two different locations in the parking lot.

Lt. Jeremy Staggs of the Waynesboro Police Department filed a report stating that Burns made a choice to get a gun, load it, and fire it, knowing that his actions could result in the deaths of Martin, Juarez, and Drumwright. Burns was charged with three counts of Criminal Attempt of First Degree Murder, one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon. He was arrested and booked into the Wayne County Jail with no bond.
