The Waynesboro City Commission met in regular session on Monday, June 14th, 2021 at City Hall in Waynesboro. All commissioners were present, including Mayor Chris Bevis, Vice Mayor Jeff Davis, Commissioner Lynn Warren, Commissioner Jeff Howell, and Commissioner Tony Creasy. Also in attendance were City Manager John Hickman, City Attorney Josh Polk, and City Recorder Paige Jackson.
Mayor Bevis called the meeting to order, and City Manager Hickman offered the invocation.
First on the agenda was approval of the minutes from the previous commission meeting. Commissioner Howell made a motion to approve, and Commissioner Warren seconded. The minutes were unanimously approved.
City Manager Hickman brought up a few items under Departmental Reports, including:
-Everything is coming together nicely for the Independence Day Celebration on July 3rd. The musical entertainment and fireworks are booked and ready, and several vendors have already signed up.
-The monthly cash collateral statements and investment reports were distributed to the commissioners for their review.
-The letter sent out to city water customers, a follow-up on the boil advisory issued during the March flooding, was mandated by TDEC in order to let customers know that the water is safe.
-New deodorizer has been ordered for use at the sewer plant. This deodorizer will be placed directly into the basins, and should help even more with the odor.
The only item of business on the agenda was the first reading of the 2020-2021 Budget Amendment Ordinance. City Manager Hickman explained that $214,156 in amendments had been added to the budget, a relatively small number considering the scope of the budget. Commissioner Creasy made a motion to approve the first reading of the ordinance. Commissioner Howell seconded the motion, and it was unanimously approved.
Under “Open Items” on the agenda, Commissioner Howell said that he had received some questions as to why the School Zone traffic warning lights had not been working since summer school began. Police Chief Walter Smith said that he had not been made aware of the summer school schedule, but he would make sure that the lights would be turned on and off at the appropriate times going forward.
Commissioner Warren asked if the new pavilion at City Park had been completed. City Manager Hickman said that there were still lights to be installed and the wood siding needed staining, but both of those things will be finished soon. Mayor Bevis pointed out, and the commission agreed, that new picnic tables need to be purchased and placed in the pavilion as soon as possible. Commissioner Warren also mentioned that the city should consider repainting the lines on the tennis court at the park.
Vice Mayor Davis asked if the City Pool and Municipal Golf Course are both doing well, and City Manager Hickman said that both have been very busy and are doing great.
Mayor Bevis asked when the budget meetings would begin, and following a brief discussion of their schedules, the commissioners agreed to hold the first 2021-2022 budget meeting on Wednesday, July 14th at 5:30 p.m.
With no further business to come before the commission, Commissioner Warren made a motion to adjourn. Commissioner Howell seconded, and the meeting was adjourned.
