The Waynesboro City Commission met in regular session on Monday, May 26th, 2020 at City Hall in Waynesboro. Commissioners in attendance included Mayor Jeff Howell, Commissioner Chris Bevis, Commissioner Jeff Davis, and Commissioner Tony Creasy. Also in attendance were City Manager John Hickman, City Attorney Josh Polk, and City Recorder Paige Jackson. Vice Mayor Charlie Mosley was absent.

Mayor Howell called the meeting to order, and Commissioner Davis offered the invocation.

Commissioner Creasy made a motion to approve the minutes from the previous meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Davis, and the minutes were unanimously approved.

Bids for sidewalk repair were the only item of new business on the agenda. City Manager Hickman presented the three bids that were submitted: Middle Tennessee Contractors, $65,515.60; R.J. Watkins, $49,920.00; and G&G Construction, $25,890.00. Commissioner Bevis made a motion to accept the low bid from G&G Construction. Commissioner Davis seconded the motion, and the bid from G&G Construction was accepted. City Manager Hickman said that the project would begin this week.

Under open items on the agenda, Mayor Howell said that he had received a complaint from a citizen on Poplar Street regarding overgrowth of weeds and trees in the lot next to her home. City Manager Hickman said that he would contact the property owner.

Mayor Howell then said that a citizen had spoken to him about the confusing speed limit signs on Highway 64 West in the area of Shakerag Hill. City Manager Hickman said that one of the “Reduced Speed Ahead” signs has been removed, and now there is only one “reduced speed” sign alerting the reduction of the speed limit from 45mph to 30mph.

Commissioner Davis mentioned the recent opening of the Waynesboro City Pool. City Manager Hickman assured the commission that many health safety precautions are in place at the pool to protect both the swimmers and the employees.

Commissioner Davis then inquired about the soccer light project at the Sportsplex, and Hickman said that work on the project began last week.

City Attorney Polk thanked the commission for addressing the landscaping issue in front of the Cash Savers complex. He said that the line of sight is much safer now for drivers exiting the parking lot.

Attorney Polk then updated the commission on the lawsuit the city filed against a former city police officer for recovery of funds the city paid for the officer’s training before he abruptly quit the department. Polk stated that the judge issued a judgment last Wednesday in favor of the city for full recovery of the amount filed, plus court costs and attorney fees.

With no further business to come before the commission, Commissioner Creasy filed a motion to adjourn. Commissioner Bevis seconded the motion, and the meeting was adjourned.
