Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner David Salyers presented Solid Waste Director Robert Hayes and Assistant Director Lindsay Ross the prestigious 2022 Government Recycler of the Year award at the Annual Tennessee Recycling and Environmental Conference.

The Wayne County Solid Waste/Recycling facility employees work diligently every day, processing and baling recyclable material, then selling the commodity to bring much needed revenue for Wayne County.

Director Robert Hayes stated, “The employees at Wayne County Solid Waste/Recycling do an excellent job of delivering the highest quality of recyclable material to the market. But none of this could have been accomplished without the residents and businesses of the county providing us with the material to process. Thank you Wayne County for making this accomplishment possible!”

In 2021, Wayne County Solid Waste was able to divert over 1,000 tons of recyclable material from ending up in the landfill, which was a savings of over $68,000 in landfill fees on top of over $88,000 generated from the sale of this material. This a combined total of over $156,000.00. This is proof that not everything you throw away is “trash.”

Congratulations to Wayne County and the Solid Waste/Recycling facility on this award!
