Wayne County Special Olympics were held at Wayne County High School on April 29, 2022.  It was a wonderful, fun-filled day for all! The athletes displayed courage, strength, and good sportsmanship throughout the day. The WCHS band provided musical entertainment for everyone, and the Wayne County Junior Civitan Club provided refreshments for the athletes. The winner of the t-shirt design contest was Sarah Grace Hamsley from WES.

Tanner Moore from Collinwood High School was presented the James Harper Courage Award. Tanner is the son of Frank & Amanda Moore. He has a brother named Peyton and a sister named Jaylee. He enjoys designing comics, animations, and slideshows on the computer. He loves gaming on the weekends and sleeping in. This award is presented each year at the Special Olympics.

James Harper was a very special person to the Harper family and to the community. He was able to show his family and others how to love unconditionally. His family feels so blessed to have had him for 51 years.

James never met a stranger and loved people of all ages. The Special Olympics were very important to him – he had the date circled on his calendar and made sure that everyone knew it too! James was always proud to be able to participate in the Special Olympics. He also had the opportunity to travel and be exposed to the world, and his family feels that he was put on this earth for a reason. When James died, the family got to hear all the stories of how he had touched so many lives; so, when James passed on, the family felt that the James Harper Courage Award was the perfect way to keep his memory alive. The Harper family hopes that this award makes the recipients feel really special!

Tanner was presented a plaque and a gift from the Harper family on behalf of the James Harper Courage Award. The Harper family also provided a very generous donation to help with the cost of the Special Olympics.
