As Wayne County schools officially reopen for the new school year, the COVID-19 virus remains at the forefront of parents’ and students’ minds. Wayne County Director of Schools Marlon Davis issued the following letter on Monday regarding the spread of the virus:

“It has been good to see our students and staff back in our schools and I hope everyone has had a great start to the school year. We have an opening schools plan that can be viewed as well as other helpful information at www.waynetn.net.

“We will continue to monitor the health data provided by the Tennessee Department of Health and the CDC, and make our local decisions based upon changing trends.

“There has been much discussion over the issue of mask mandates with the opening of schools. This topic has turned into a political issue that included divided opinions. With the rise of cases in our area, I feel we can take action to minimize the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks where necessary. We began last year with great participation from both staff and students and this continued for much of the school year until cases went on a sharp decline, so I know it is possible again. I strongly urge staff and students to practice health conscious habits such as mask wearing, social distancing, and hand washing. All of these measures will help mitigate the spread. This is NOT a mandate, but just good practice for a healthier environment for both staff and students. We have had a great start to the school year and it has been wonderful to see our schools return to a normal schedule.”
