A statement released by Lt. Jeremy Staggs of the Waynesboro Police Department said that on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at approximately 9:00 am, City Employee Derrick Gobble discovered an outbuilding at the Waynesboro Sportsplex had been broken into, and the City’s Kubota UTV was stolen. After taking the report, Patrolman Darren Pounders notified the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, and Sergeant Bryant Burcham was to be on the lookout for the orange Kubota RTV400 Utility Vehicle. Sergeant Burcham informed Patrolman Pounders he had possibly seen the UTV in the Pine Ridge area earlier that morning.
At approximately 11:30 am, while driving through the area to investigate, Patrolman Pounders observed an orange Kubota UTV sitting behind a building on Pine Ridge Road. When Patrolman Pounders arrived at the residence, Colby Mathis and Scottie Pulley were found to be in possession of the stolen UTV. Sergeant Burcham confirmed Scottie Pulley was driving the UTV when he saw them earlier.

Further investigation determined Colby Mathis broke into the concession stand and outbuildings at the Sportsplex. Mathis was also found to have several syringes used to inject illegal drugs and a small bag of marijuana. Colby Mathis was charged with TCA 39-14-103 Theft of Property over $2500, TCA 39-14-402 Burglary, TCA 39-17-425 Possession of Unlawful Drug Paraphernalia, and TCA 39-17-418 Simple Possession of Schedule VI.
