Three traffic stops performed last week by Wayne County Sheriff’s Office deputies resulted in four arrests on drug charges, including significant amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana.
On Monday, September 23rd, Sergeant Bryant Burcham performed a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Luke Freemon, age 32, of Waynesboro, for crossing the centerline. When Freemon exited the vehicle, Sgt. Burcham allegedly smelled a faint odor of marijuana, and was denied consent from Freemon to search the vehicle. K9 Eryk then alerted on the driver’s side door, and officers recovered a bag hidden inside the vehicle that contained approximately 3.6 grams of methamphetamine and approximately 44 grams of marijuana. Freemon was arrested on charges of manufacture/delivery/sale/possession of methamphetamine and possession of schedule VI marijuana for resale, and was booked into the Wayne County Jail with no bond.
The following day, Tuesday, September 24th, Sgt. Burcham performed a traffic stop on a 2013 Kia Soul driven by Telina Thompson, age 50, of Florence, Alabama, for erratic driving behavior. Sgt. Burcham’s report stated that three subjects inside the vehicle appeared very nervous while he was speaking with them. One of the passengers, identified as Julius Antione Lee, age 40, of Montevallo, AL, was confirmed to have an active warrant out of Lauderdale County, AL. When Thompson, the driver, exited the vehicle, Sgt. Burcham allegedly observed a large bulge in her blue jean shorts, and Thompson revealed it to be a Crown Royal bag containing approximately 66.7 grams of methamphetamine. Thompson told officers that Lee had instructed her to shove the bag of meth down into her shorts to conceal it. Thompson was arrested on charges of manufacture/delivery/sale/possession of methamphetamine and driving while in possession of methamphetamine, and was booked into the Wayne County Jail on $76,000.00 bond. Lee was arrested on a charge of manufacture/delivery/sale/possession of methamphetamine, and was booked into the Wayne County Jail on $75,000.00 bond.
On Wednesday, September 25th, Deputy Tyler McKenzie performed a traffic stop on a 1990 Nissan pickup driven by John Larry Haggard, age 46, of Waynesboro, for improper display of plates. When Haggard allegedly denied consent for Deputy McKenzie to search the vehicle, K9 Eryk performed an exterior scan of the vehicle and alerted to the odor of narcotics. A search of the vehicle was then performed by Deputy McKenzie, allegedly revealing approximately 7 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 2 grams of marijuana, two marijuana pipes, rolling papers, plastic bags, and a snorting straw containing white residue. Haggard was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent, driving while in possession of methamphetamine, simple possession of schedule VI marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Wayne County Jail $88,500.00 bond.
