It seems that scammers are at it again – this time targeting shoppers at Piggly Wiggly in Waynesboro. An illegal card skimmer was discovered at the Waynesboro Piggly Wiggly last week after the illegal devices were also discovered at the Savannah and Adamsville Piggly Wiggly locations.
Scammers sneak illegal card skimmers onto payment terminals in stores so they can grab data from your card’s magnetic strip - all without you knowing a thing. According to Waynesboro Police Chief Walter Smith, a skimming device was located at the Waynesboro Piggly Wiggly location last week, and more may already be in place in other stores but not yet discovered. As readers may remember, Cash Savers in Waynesboro was the target of the same kind of scamming device last year. Card skimmers can be placed on a payment terminal in a mere matter of seconds, and they are not readily noticeable by customers or store employees. Scammers are able to get your information from the magnetic strip on the back of debit, credit, and EBT cards as your card is swiped through the machine.
Customers paying with a card anywhere are encouraged to learn how to spot card skimmers. Pay attention to the card reader – is it loose, off-center, or do parts of it wiggle? If so, don’t put your card there. Report it to the store manager immediately.
Chief Smith said the investigation into the card skimmer at Piggly Wiggly is ongoing. He and his officers will be watching as much surveillance footage as is necessary in an attempt to see who and when the skimmer was illegally placed onto the card reader.
