Last week, South Central Human Resource Agency Foster Grandparent Program celebrated the valuable contributions of AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who pledged to “get things done” for our nation as part of the annual AmeriCorps Week.

County Mayor Jim Mangubat kicked off the week-long celebration this year at Waynesboro Elementary School, where he signed a Proclamation designating March 13-19 as AmeriCorps Week. Currently, 36 AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serve with SCHRA’s Foster Grandparent Program in local schools and afterschool programs across the Agency’s 13-county area. In the last 20 years, Foster Grandparent Volunteers serving this area have given 255,805 hours to the community. The Foster Grandparent Program serves mature adults over the age of 55 that qualify as low income. In addition to the personal benefits experienced through the program, volunteers also receive a modest stipend for their volunteer hours. Foster Grandparent volunteers assist teachers in classrooms with children who need one on one mentoring or tutoring.

The program is always looking for new volunteers. If you are interested in serving AmeriCorps Seniors and the Foster Grandparent Program, please contact Jeana Mills at 931-433-7182 EXT 1126.
