Sheriff Shane Fisher announced last week that the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office intends to begin more strict enforcement of state laws which require residents to register their vehicles in the county where they reside.
“The State of Tennessee requires residents to pay for their vehicle registrations in the county where they actually live,” said Sheriff Fisher. “Some people think that it’s okay to go to another county in the state to register their vehicle if the registration cost is a little cheaper. However, Tennessee residents are required by law to purchase their tags in the county where they live and pay property taxes.”
Vehicle registration is processed at the Wayne County Clerk (Stan Horton)’s office in the courthouse on the square in Waynesboro. To register a new vehicle, you will need to submit the following:
•Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin
•New Vehicle Invoice
•Copy of your current registration if transferring your license plate
To register a used vehicle, submit the following:
•Valid certificate of title properly assigned along with an Odometer Disclosure Statement, if applicable
•Copy of the current registration if transferring your license plate
Sheriff Fisher said that he wanted to give citizens a “heads-up” on plans to more strictly enforce the registration law. He said that his officers will begin issuing citations for violating the law within the next thirty days.
