The regular season ended Friday night at Hampshire for the WCHS basketball teams as they both took wins over the Hawks and Lady Hawks. Both teams suffered losses on Tuesday at the hands of Hardin County. The Ladycats play in District 12-1A action on Monday at home against Perry County for a chance to advance to the tourney on Friday at Waynesboro. The Wildcats also face Perry County. They will travel to Linden on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. to try to advance to the tourney bracket for Friday.
Against Hardin County on Tuesday, the Ladycats trailed, 16 – 10, at the end of the first period and were down 23 – 18 at the half. They matched points in the third as they went 7 of 8 from the foul line, and continued to trail by 5 going into the fourth. They could get no closer and fell by the final score of 49 – 40.
Kelley Baugus led the Ladycats with 16 points. She had 3 rebounds and an assist. Savanna McClain scored 8 points and had 3 rebounds and a steal. Henley Floyd hit 2 three point goals for 6 points and had a rebound and an assist, while Cambree Camfield had 5 points, 2 boards, and a steal. Michaela Gallian added 4 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and had a steal and 2 assists. Lauren Bryant rounded out the scoring with 1 point and had 2 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Lexie Lee had a rebound, and Charlie Woodside had a steal. The Ladycats shot only 31.4% from the field and had 13 turnovers.
The Wildcats fell behind 19 – 9 at the end of the first quarter, and saw the margin increase to 36 – 21 by halftime. Hardin County hit for 21 points in the third and went on to take the win by the final score of 78 – 43.
All Wildcat players saw action with Clay Baugus leading in scoring with 18 points. He had 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Tyler Moser scored 4 points and had 8 rebounds, while Adam Goss had 5 points with an assist. Austin Whitson also scored 5 points and had 3 rebounds, a block, a steal, and an assist. Dawson Willis came off the bench in the fourth to score 4 points and grab 3 rebounds. Braxton Butler and Ethan Camfield each hit a three pointer and each grabbed one rebound. Wyatt Kelley scored 1 point, had a rebound, and a steal. Cade Crews had a rebound and a block, and Jesse Dixon had 3 rebounds and a block. Gaynes Keaton had 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Carson Prater had 3 rebounds, and Cordell Littrell had an assist. The Wildcats shot 35% from the field and 35% from the foul line. They committed 25 turnovers.
Against the Lady Hawks, the turnover bug again bit the Ladycats as they had 15 mistakes in the first half. They managed only 4 points in the opening quarter, to trail 8 – 4. In the second, the margin increased to 8, 21 – 13. The Ladycats fought back in the third, Cambree Camfield opened the second half with a 3, followed by a Hampshire turnover and a Michaela Gallian basket, as the Ladycats cut into the margin. Savanna McClain hit for 2 to make it a one point game, and following another Lady Hawk turnover, Kelley Baugus hit a 3 to put the Ladycats up 23 – 21. Hampshire went on to lead 35 – 30 at the end of the quarter. In the fourth, Camfield hit her second 3, followed by a Baugus steal and basket to tie the game at 35 all. The teams exchanged leads until the 1:58 mark, Henley Floyd hit a big 3, her second of the game, to put the Ladycats up 49 – 47. A McClain basket with 1:09 left put the Ladycats on top to stay, 51 – 47. The Lady Hawks left the door open for the Ladycats, going to the line twice for bonus free throw opportunities in the final thirty seconds, which they failed to convert. Hampshire scored a final basket with 2.2 seconds left to make the final score 53 – 49.
Savanna McClain led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points. She had 3 boards, 2 steals, and an assist. Cambree Camfield hit for 11 points, including 3 three-point goals, and had 4 rebounds and a steal. Kelley Baugus hit for 10 points and had 8 rebounds, 6 steals, and 6 assists. Lauren Bryant scored 7 points and had 2 rebounds, 3 steals, and an assist, and Henley Floyd and Michaela Gallian each had 6 points. Floyd had a rebound and an assist, while Gallian had a rebound, a block, a steal, and an assist. Charli Woodside had 3 boards, while Lexie Lee had 2 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. The Ladycats finished with 25 turnovers on the night, 20 of which were the unforced variety. They managed to force 20 Lady Hawk turnovers, coming up with 14 steals, and shot 41.3% for the game.
The Wildcats came out and trailed 10 – 9 after the first quarter of action. Wyatt Kelley went to work in the second, scoring 6 points in the period to lead a 17 – 9 surge to lead 26 – 19 at the half. Kelley continued to score in the third, coming up with 6 more. The Wildcats went on to take the win 58 – 42.
Clay Baugus led the ‘Cats with 19 points. He had 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Kelley finished with 14 points and had a team high 8 rebounds, with 3 steals and an assist. Tyler Moser scored 10 points and had 4 rebounds and an assist, and Cade Crews added 8 points and had a rebound, a block, and a steal. Adam Goss scored 6 points and had 7 boards, a steal, and an assist. Austin Whitson hit a free throw and had 4 rebounds. Ethan Camfield had a reobund and 2 steals. The Wildcats shot 41% from the field and out rebounded the Hawks, 32 – 25.
