Nurses have been, and will continue to be, on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic for as long as it continues. They see the worst of the worst, and are true warriors who fight every day for their patients.

Nurses who work in nursing homes and rehab facilities are often overlooked for all they do as well. During this unprecedented time in our lives, these nurses are the only connection between the residents they work with and the residents’ families. They not only administer medical care, but also emotional support, love, and understanding.

National Nurses Day is observed annually on May 6th. It is the beginning of National Nurses week, which is from May 6th through May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale was a celebrated English social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She became well-known while taking care of the wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Nightingale was dubbed “The Lady with the Lamp” because of her habit of making rounds at night.

The theme for this National Nurses Week is “Nursing: the Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit.” Although nurses are almost always under-recognized for all they do, this is a time to especially remember their dedication to keeping all of us and our loved ones safe and healthy.
