Ladycats Win at Clarksburg, Wildcats Fall to Rockets

   A short week of WCHS basketball saw the Ladycats take another win, while the Wildcats suffered another loss. The teams traveled to Clarksburg in West Tennessee on Friday night for competition. The Ladycats came away with a 57 – 31 win. The ‘Cats, who had previously defeated the Rockets, suffered a heartbreaking 44 – 38 loss. Following a game with Decatur/Riverside on Monday night, the teams will be in action on Thursday and Friday of this week. They will play on Thursday at Collinwood, with the Ladycats facing Mt. Pleasant at 4:00 p.m. and the Wildcats following against Shoals Christian at 5:15. On Friday night, the ‘Cats will play Richland at 5:15 and the Ladycats will follow, going against the Richland Lady Raiders at approximately 6:30 p.m. These games will conclude action until 2020.

   At Clarksburg, the Ladycats jumped out to a 13 – 6 first quarter lead. They upped the margin to 20, 28 – 8, by halftime and coasted to a 57 – 31 win with all dressed players seeing action. Kelley Baugus and Lauren Bryant led in scoring with 13 points each. Baugus had 3 boards, 3 steals, and 5 assists. Bryant tallied a rebound and 2 steals. Cambree Camfield scored 9 points and had 2 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Michaela Gallian had 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists, and Henley Floyd had two three-pointers, 2 steals, and an assist. Lauren Prater had a three and 3 boards, while Savanna McClain, Lexie Lee, and Kelsey Carroll each scored 2 points. McClain had a team high 6 rebounds, a steal, and 4 assists, while Lee had a rebound, a block, and an assist. Charlie Woodside had a rebound, a steal, and 2 assists. The Ladycats forced 18 turnovers, coming up with 12 steals.

   The Wildcats trailed, 8 – 7, at the end of the first quarter and fell behind 18 – 14 by halftime. In the third, a Braxton Butler steal and free throw put the ‘Cats on top 23 – 22  with 2:34 left in the third.  Clarksburg went on a run and pushed the lead up to double digits in the fourth. The ‘Cats went on a run of their own down the stretch. Butler hit a 3 pointer with 17.5 seconds left to cut the margin to 42 – 38.  The ‘Cats fouled, putting the Rockets to the line. They hit one of two to make the margin 43 – 38. The Wildcats got another look from 3, but missed. The Rockets made another free throw to seal the win, 44 – 38.

   Tyler Moser led the ‘Cats in scoring with 8 points. He had 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Ethan Camfield hit for 7 points and had 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Wyatt Kelley had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and a steal. Clay Baugus, Braxton Butler, and Adam Goss each had 5 points. Baugus had 3 boards and a steal, while Butler had a rebound, a block, 2 steals, and an assist. Goss added a rebound and 2 assists.  Gaynes Keaton had 2 points and a rebound. Cade Crews had 4 boards, a block, a steal, and 2 assists.  The Wildcats were only 5 of 17 from the free throw line and had 18 turnovers.

   The Ladycats are now 6 – 1 on the year while the ‘Cats are 1 – 7. Following a busy week of games, the teams will break for the holidays. Come out Thursday and Friday and cheer them on to wins.  “MERRY CHRISTMAS ‘CATS AND LADYCATS!”—Submitted
