The Wayne County High School teams traveled to Summertown on Tuesday night to face the Eagles and Lady Eagles in district action. Both teams committed too many turnovers to stay in the games and both lost their respective contests. On Friday night, they traveled to Collinwood. The Ladycats avenged an earlier loss to the Trojanettes, taking the win by the final score of 58 – 50, despite the turnover bug biting again. The Wildcats took care of the ball against the Trojans, but the hot three-point shooting of their opponent kept the margin insurmountable. They fell by the final of 60 – 53.
The Ladycats got behind early against Summertown on Tuesday night, trailing 18 – 10 at the end of the first quarter as the Ladycats turned the ball over 6 times in the first quarter, leading to easy baskets for the Lady Eagles. Summertown was 8 of 11 from the field in the first. The Ladycats trailed 25 – 18 at the half and never really got on track, losing by the final score of 58 – 33.
Sophomores Savanna McClain and Michaela Gallian led the Ladycats with 10 points each. McClain had 3 rebounds and a steal, and Gallian had 5 boards, 2 blocks, and an assist. Cambree Camfield added 5 points and had 4 rebounds and 2 steals, while Kelley Baugus and Lexie Lee added 3 points each. Baugus had 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists, while Lee had 2 rebounds. Lauren Bryant had 2 points with 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Allie Hill had a rebound. The Ladycats shot 8.3% from three and finished at 27.5% for the game. They turned the ball over 24 times.
The Wildcats fell behind from the start against the Eagles of Summertown, trailing 31 – 5 at the end of the first quarter. The ‘Cats turned the ball over against the Eagle press, leading to many easy baskets. The Eagles shot 9 of 12 in the first quarter alone. They upped the lead to 55 – 15 at the half and turned the game over to the bench to run away with an 88 – 26 win.
Clay Baugus led the ‘Cats with 13 points. Eli McClain scored 4 points, while Gaynes Keaton and Tyler Moser each had 3. Austin Whitson scored 2 points. Remaining stats were unavailable at press time.
The Ladycats trailed 15 – 12 at the end of the first quarter against the Trojanettes of Collinwood. They fought back in the second, as Henley Floyd and Cambree Camfield each nailed a 3, to take a 27 – 26 lead at the half. In the third, the Ladycats upped the lead to 41 – 36, as Lexie Lee scored 5 points in the quarter. With 2:43 left in the game, the Trojanettes forced two turnovers, cutting the margin to 48 – 46. A Michaela Gallian jumper with 1:49 left put the Ladycats up 50 – 46. Collinwood hit two free throws with 1:34 left to cut the margin again to 50 – 48, but Lexie Lee answered with another basket, making the score 52 – 48. Collinwood again went to the foul line with 37.6 seconds left to reduce the margin to 52 – 50. Lauren Bryant hit two free throws on the next possession and Collinwood missed 2 free throws. The Ladycats came away with the 58 – 50 win.
Michaela Gallian and Savanna McClain led the Ladycats with 14 and 10 points respectively. Gallian had 4 rebounds and an assist, while McClain had 5 boards and 2 assists. Both players fouled out in the contest. Lexie Lee came off the bench to hit for 9 points and had 4 rebounds and a steal. Kelley Baugus and Lauren Bryant each scored 8 points. Baugus had 6 rebounds, a steal, and 7 assists, while Bryant had 3 rebounds, a steal, and 2 assists. Cambree Camfield had 5 points and 3 rebounds, and Henley Floyd had 4 points with 4 assists. The Ladycats shot well, hitting 50% from the field, but the 24 turnovers made a huge difference in the game.
The Wildcats faced a high shooting Trojan team on Friday night. They saw Collinwood nail 4 three point shots in the first quarter, and trailed 20 – 16 at the end of the first. The Trojans followed that up with 5 three’s in the second to lead 41 – 26 at the half. In the third, the ‘Cats were unable to score and trailed 48 to 35. An Adam Goss offensive rebound and basket cut the margin to 8, at 51 – 43, with 1:11 remaining. An Ethan Camfield 3 cut the lead to 7, with the final score being 60 – 53.
Clay Baugus led the Wildcats with17 points. He had 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 5 assists. Adam Goss scored 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half. He had a rebound, 2 steals, and an assist. Cade Crews finished with 9 points and had 4 boards and 2 assists, and Tyler Moser had 8 points with 6 rebounds and a steal. Ethan Camfield had 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Wyatt Kelley scored 2 points. Austin Whitson had 4 rebounds and an assist. The ‘Cats forced 17 turnovers, and shot 42.3% from the field. The Trojans hit 12 three point goals for 63.2% and out rebounded the ‘Cats 33 – 24.
The Wildcats now are 4 – 17 on the year and 1 – 7 in District 12-1A. The Ladycats, with their win over the Trojanettes, are now 11 – 8, and 3 – 4 in the district. Following a trip to Perry County on Tuesday, the teams host Loretto in their final district game. Hardin County comes to town on Tuesday night the 11th and then the regular season concludes at Hampshire on the 13th.
