WCHS Lady Cats are Runners-Up in Times Daily Tournament

The Wayne County High School Lady Cat basketball captured second place last week in the Times Daily Basketball Tournament held in the Florence, AL area. The Lady Cats took victories over Muscle Shoals and Lauderdale County on Saturday and Monday before falling to Deshler on Tuesday night at UNA’ s Flowers Hall. The Lady Cats and Wildcats are on the road this week, playing in Pensacola, FL Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Both teams captured wins in Monday’s action. The Lady Cats are now 13 – 3 on the year, while the ‘Cats are 8 – 5.

Against Muscle Shoals on Saturday, the Lady Cats jumped out to a 15 – 6 lead after one quarter. Muscle Shoals kept pace in the second quarter, with the lead being 27 – 17 at the half. A big third quarter gave the Lady Cats a 49 – 24 advantage going into the fourth. The Lady Cats came away with a 69 – 48 win. Five Lady Cats hit for double figures with Lauren Bryant leading the way with 18 points. She had a steal and 2 assists. Savanna McClain added 17 points, 10 boards, a steal, and 2 assists. Michaela Gallian came off the bench to hit for 12 points, including 10 of 11 from the foul line. She had 2 rebounds and a steal. Blair Baugus and Cambree Camfield each hit for 10 points. Baugus had 2 rebounds, a steal, and an asssist, while Camfield added 2 boards and an assist. Jac Keaton scored 2 points and had 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist, and Annie Lee had a steal.

Against Lauderdale County on Monday night, the Lady Cats matched their opponent in the first quarter and led by double digits, 16 – 6 at the end of the first. LC fought back, cutting the margin to 23 – 17 by the half. The third saw the Lady Cats go on a run of 18  – 7 with Lauren Bryant hitting for 8 in the quarter to take a 41 – 23 lead. They finished off the win, 60 – 48. Blair Baugus led the way with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals. Savanna McClain finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 4 assists. Lauren Bryant added 12 points, a rebound, 2 steals, and 3 assists. Michaela Gallian had 7 points with 4 boards, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Jac Keaton added 6 points with 2 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists. Cambree Camfield hit for 4 points and had 2 boards and a steal. Annie Lee had a rebound and a steal. The Lady Cats out-rebounded Lauderdale by 10.

In the championship game, the Lady Cats fell behind early, 12 – 9, at the end of the first quarter. They managed 10 in the second but trailed 25 – 19 at the half. In the third, Deshler added 4 to the margin. The Lady Cats fell by the final score of 61 – 47. The Lady Cats were led in scoring by Blair Baugus and Lauren Bryant with 19 and 17 points respectively. Baugus grabbed 12 rebounds and had steal and an assist. Bryant had a rebound, 2 steals, and 3 assists. Michaela Gallian added 5 points with a rebound and 4 assists. Savanna McClain scored 4 points and had 4 rebounds. Kenzie Griggs had 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Jac Keaton had 2 rebounds and a steal, while Annie Lee had 2 rebounds. The Lady Cats shot only 38% from the field. Tuesday, January 4 will see the teams traveling to Loretto, then they will return home on Friday the 7th to host Richland and begin district action. “HAPPY NEW YEAR ‘CATS & LADY CATS!”
