A gruesome discovery was made on Sunday while an individual was looking through what remained of a burned house on 48 Creek Road.

The Wayne County Volunteer Fire Department responded on Saturday to a call of a house on fire on 48 Creek Road. The unoccupied and reportedly uninhabited house ended up as a total loss after the fire department fought the flames for several hours.

According to Wayne County Sheriff Shane Fisher, an individual who may have had connections to the property owner came to the burned house on Sunday and was looking through what remained of the contents when they discovered what appeared to be human remains.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) took over the investigation at that point at the request of Sheriff Fisher and District Attorney General Brent Cooper. The remains were then sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Nashville to confirm if they were human remains, and if so, who they were and how they died.

As of press time on Tuesday, Sheriff Fisher stated that he had not yet gotten word from the Medical Examiner’s office as to whether or not the remains found were human.
