Inmate Dies While in Custody at Wayne County Jail

According to a press release from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, in the evening hours of March 3, 2023, an in-custody death was reported to the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office by Sheriff Shane Fisher regarding an incident at the Wayne County Jail/Workhouse.

22nd Judicial District Attorney Brent Cooper confirmed that an inmate had been found deceased at the jail, and his investigators are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.

“Any death that occurs while someone is in custody is taken very seriously,” said Sheriff Fisher. “We work diligently to make sure the investigation is thorough and properly carried out.”

The body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy, which will reveal the cause of death. The inmate’s identity has not yet been released by the District Attorney’s office.
