When a tornado devastated the Old Highway 64 and Natural Bridge Road/Highway 99 area just a couple of weeks ago, residents of the community began pitching in to help with the cleanup and offered assistance of all kinds to those affected by the storm. Little did anyone know that our county would experience flash flooding in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 31st, causing destruction once again. After heavy rains late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, creeks and streams flowed out of their banks and turned into raging rivers.

The usually peaceful waters of Green River and other creeks quickly turned into a flood of muddy water and debris, consuming and destroying some bridges and roadways. Many Wayne County residents whose homes are close to creeks experienced flood waters that overtook their yards, basements, and vehicles.

Waynesboro Mayor Chris Bevis said that he received a message early Wednesday morning that the Waynesboro water plant’s basement had flooded, affecting the plant’s ability to treat and process water. A boil notice for city water customers was issued at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, but was allowed to expire at 12:00 noon on Thursday after the flood waters receded.

“The other City Commissioners and I are deeply concerned for all our citizens who have been affected by both the recent tornado and flooding,” said Mayor Bevis. “We have been in contact with one another, along with City Manager John Hickman, during both of these disastrous events.”

“All the city employees, along with county employees and TVEC, have done a great job trying to get roads, bridges, and power restored as quickly as possible,” Bevis went on to say. “They are all to be commended for their hard work. Also, Wayne Countians have shown once again that they are there for one another when needed.”

The American Red Cross offers assistance to those affected by natural disasters, such as the tornado and flooding recently experienced in our area. To receive assistance, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or go to their website at www.redcross.org. The regional Red Cross office for Wayne County is the Nashville location. Those who access the website should select the Nashville office, and then click on “Get Help.”

Along with providing shelter for those who have been displaced, the Red Cross also offers cleanup kits for those who are trying to recover from disasters. The cleanup kits include items such as shovels, rakes, brooms, mops, bleach, gloves, trash bags, etc.
