The Frank Hughes Lions are in the midst of a hard fought season. Coming into 2020 with a 5 and 6 record, the boys’ team boasted wins over Bruceton, Hampshire, and Big Sandy. They also had two wins over Clarksburg. The Lions have proven to be a competitive team edging into district play. Senior, Wyatt Alley, leads the team in scoring with a total of 272 points through the first thirteen games. In the win over Hampshire, Alley posted 40 points which is a career high for him.

FHS opened 2020 with a loss to Decatur County and a 52-51 win over Waterloo High School. Wayne County High School would be the first district opponent that the Lions would face.  A battle throughout four quarters, the teams would have to face-off in overtime to determine a winner for the contest. Frank Hughes came out on top, 64-59. Leading scoring for the Lions in the win were Wyatt Alley and Clayton Davis, scoring 19 and 17 respectively. Also adding to the total was Macaden Hunt with 10, AJ Potts with 9, Adien Potts with 7, and Hayden Kiddy with 3.

The FHS Lady Lions team came into the new year working toward improvement. The ladies entered 2020 with only 2 wins over Bruceton and Big Sandy. They were able to improve their record with a win over Waterloo on January 4th. Junior, Brylie Johnson, is the scoring leader for the Lady Lions, averaging 11.6 points per game through the first half of the season.

On January 7th, the Lady Lions traveled to Waynesboro to take on the Lady Cats in district play. The Lady Lions challenged the WCHS team in the first quarter defensively, but were unable to score the points needed to mount a very aggressive attack. The Lady Lions were outmatched through all four quarters and fell to the Lady Cats, 18-63. Scorers on the night were Jayden Surratt with 6, Brylie Johnson with 4, McKenzie Boucher added a 3 point basket, and Zoe Boyd wrapped up scoring with a free throw.
