Derek Ray Brewer, age 26, of Cypress Inn, was arrested on Friday, February 14th after allegedly stealing a school bus and then breaking into a personal vehicle. The report filed by Lt. Jeremy Staggs of the Waynesboro Police Department states that on Thursday, February 13th, a school bus was taken from the Wayne County School Bus Garage on Hog Creek Road and driven onto private property across the road, where it became stuck in the mud. When the bus was discovered, the keys had been taken from it. Later that morning, a Waynesboro man, Gregory Gean, allegedly observed Brewer near his vehicle and asked him what he was doing. Brewer asked Gean for some dry shoes and a jacket, at which time Gean took Brewer to his apartment and gave him some dry boots and a warm shirt. When Gean was giving Brewer the items, an item that had been taken from Gean’s vehicle allegedly fell out of Brewer’s pocket onto the floor. Gean went on to recover more items from Brewer that had been taken from his vehicle, along with the keys and keychain for the school bus that was stolen earlier. Brewer was arrested on charges of vandalism, two counts of burglary, and two counts of theft of property. He was booked into the Wayne County Jail on $75,000.00 bond.
