CHS Trojans Watered Down by the Raiders

Collinwood’s game against the Richland Raiders was moved up to Thursday night in hopes of dodging the storms coming in from Hurricane Laura. However, other storm fronts not associated with Laura didn’t get the memo, which resulted in a soaked field and a one-hour weather delay.  When the Trojans finally took the field, the elements as well as poor field position and costly turnovers plagued the Men in Green late into the night. Statistically, both teams were almost identical, with the only major differences being turnovers and the final score. Collinwood even won the time of possession but couldn’t find the end zone as often as the Raiders. There was only a 29 yard difference between Collinwood and Richland in total offense, yet Richland only had to move the ball ½ as far as the Trojans as their field position began around the 50 on average, while the Trojans started inside their own 20 for the majority of the night.

Collinwood took the ball first and got a spark on the first play as Dayton Scott found Joe Houston Thompson deep down the field, but the drive stalled out and Richland took over in their worst field position of the night. A misdirection run that some remember as the old “cross-buck” allowed the Raider tailback to break loose and sprint 74 yards for the first score of the night. The extra point was no good and the Trojans found themselves behind early, 6-0. After a long, well earned drive down the field, Dayton Scott spotted Nick Sanderson sprinting down the Trojan sideline. Scott’s pass was tipped, but Sanderson’s concentration was not deterred as he performed his own version of the “tip drill” and ran the ball past the goal line. Peyton Ward, bullied his way into the end zone for the 2 point conversion. Trojans leading 8-6. The Trojan defense found itself fighting with their back against the wall as Richland took over at mid-field and drove down to the 18 yard line. Collinwood held tough and forced a 4th and 16 from the 18 yard line, but a well-positioned pass to the back of the end zone found the outstretched arms of a Richland receiver. The point after was good and the Raiders retook the lead 13-8. The Trojans battled back, mounting a drive on hard-nosed running by Ward, Haddock, and Thompson. The drive ended after a costly interception inside the 5 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage after the turnover, the Trojan defense and the wet field led to a safety. Richland 13 – Trojans 10.  Richland added 2 other scores in the 3rd and 4th quarter, both from 1 yard out after short drives following turnovers. Collinwood showed moments of brilliance and was practically guaranteed 4 to 5 yards per carry on the ground, but with time being a factor, the rushing attack could not deliver soon enough. Final score: Richland 26 – Collinwood 10.

Joe Houston Thompson led all rushers with 88 yards on 11 carries. Peyton Ward had 47 yards on 9 carries. Dayton Scott finished with 89 yards through the air. Joe Houston Thompson and Peyton Ward led all tacklers with 10 each. Joe Hensley finished with 8 tackles. Griffin Pigg contributed 7 tackles on the night.
