The Huntland Hornets were a model of efficiency on the ground Friday night at Pat Brewer Stadium. The wing-t offense rolled up 330 yards on 50 attempts, averaging 6.6 yards per carry. The Hornets scored touchdowns consistently as well, 1 in each quarter. Finding themselves down 14-0 just before halftime, Dayton Scott hit Nick Sanderson on a wide receiver screen pass and Sanderson sprinted 18 yards into the end zone. Hornets 14, Trojans 6 at the half. The Trojans didn’t “come alive” again until less than a minute to go in the game, when Joe Houston Thompson scored from 2 yards out with 21 seconds remaining. The Trojans secured the following onside kick, but the late game heroics were not enough to overcome the Hornets’ 28 points.  Final score Huntland 28, Collinwood 12.

Dayton Scott finished the night completing 17 of 23 attempts for 208 yards and 1 score. Nick Sanderson caught 6 balls for 102 yards and a score. Drake Ray had 5 catches for 55 yards. Joe Houston Thompson and Peyton Ward each had 3 receptions for 38 yards and 13 yards respectively. Peyton Ward led all rushers with 34 yards on 11 carries. Alex Haddock had 17 yards on 3 carries.

Defensively, Fletcher Thompson led all tacklers with 16 and a quarterback sack. Joe Houston Thompson had 11 tackles of his own. Joe Hensley and Peyton Ward had 10 tackles each.

I have mixed emotions writing this recap today for a number of reasons. For starters, this will be my last article, not just for this season, but forever. Secondly, this team and Collinwood football in general, means a great deal to me and I truly believe that this team was better than their first round exit from the playoffs. To the Seniors on this team, Dayton Scott, Alex Haddock, Lige Craig, Fletcher Hale, and Joe Hensley, you are the newest members of our club. This club is a brotherhood with great pride, but also great remorse. The club that you now belong to is filled with every other Collinwood football player that ended their playing career with regrets, with “would ofs, should ofs, and could ofs” and with the worst of these; “I wish I had done that differently.” See, every player that plays this game and ends their season without walking away with a championship ring will have these feelings. Don’t get me wrong, these feelings are not debilitating, but they do spring up every year when the lights of Friday Night are turned on for the first time. These feelings unite former players, give us all great stories to relive, and cause us to come back, hoping to live vicariously through that next year’s team. Some of you Seniors already understand what it means to be a part of this club as I recognized those emotions in some of you after the game was over. We never truly understand how much we enjoy or love something until we don’t get to do it any longer. However, we can never seem to understand the gravity of finality when there is still time left on the clock, but as soon as the final whistle sounds, it becomes perfectly clear. Hopefully, some player that still has some seasons ahead will heed this advice and not let their playing days be over, unless it is on their own terms. Finally, for anyone reading this and thinking it is a little dramatic… it probably is, but the opposite philosophy, the “that’s good enough” mentality is also the reason that every Trojan football player has ended their season without a championship. Maybe, next year…—-Submitted by Billy Robertson
