He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Jo Theo Mathis. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judy Barber Mathis, his two children Robert and Jerry Elizabeth Mathis, sister-in-law Jerry Forrester, and step-sisters-in-law Roberta Anderson and Wanda Qualls.
Bert first and foremost was a devout Christian man, serving the Lord as a minister for Fairfield Church of
Christ and Brush Creek Church of Christ.
Bert started his career as an educator in Hickman County in 1968. He has held several positions in the school system including bus driver, teacher, vocational director, and principal. He also served the Town of
Centerville as an alderman for many years.
He was a devoted University of Tennessee fan, good or bad. He was also an avid supporter of all Hickman
County Bulldog and Perry County Viking sports.
In his retirement years he enjoyed mowing the yard with a cigar in his mouth, washing the cars, fishing, and visiting places on his history bucket list. He always put others before himself and wanted the best for everyone.
