Over 90 young hunters signed up for the Ashtin Grimes Memorial Youth Squirrel hunt this year, the largest group in the five-year history of the hunt. Because of the pandemic, activities were scaled down from previous years. Volunteer dog handlers and guides were paired with groups of hunters for the morning hunt.
“We were able to give away several prizes, including eight guns,” said Wayne County TWRA Officer Brandon Taylor. “It was a huge success considering the changes that we made due to Covid. Everybody was kept outside and masks were required. Prior to the hunt, and we had breakfast bagged up for everyone to grab as they headed off to the woods.”
Some youngsters were able to harvest a squirrel, but all of those in attendance were treated to a day in Tennessee’s outdoors.
A $500.00 scholarship, created in Ashtin’s memory by his parents, Brad and April Morris, was awarded to Peyton Griggs.
