The 2020 Butterfly 5K Run/Walk is coming up this Saturday, August 22nd. This year’s Run will be different than in the past – this year will be a Virtual 5K! The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted many planned events this year, and the Butterfly 5K is no exception.
Hosted by the Butterfly Foundation, this fundraising event is held each year to honor Ryleigh Meree Stegall, who lost her battle with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia (ALL) in 2007. Ryleigh, the daughter of Steven and Michelle Stegall, was first diagnosed with the disease at the tender age of three years old. She endured chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and even though she lost her beautiful brown hair, she never lost her infectious smile or her sweet spirit. The Butterfly Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Ryleigh’s “Nana” Dean Stegall and named for Ryleigh’s love of butterflies, raises money to assist families and children in Wayne County and the surrounding area with life-threatening or life-altering conditions. Everyone who wants to run or walk in this year’s Virtual 5K and be eligible for an award will need to do a few things. If you haven’t turned in your registration form or registered online, do it SOON. Every runner must be registered PRIOR TO Saturday, August 22nd. To register online, go to butterfly5k.itsyourrace.com. Non-racing forms need to be turned in to Jim Beavers by Friday at noon.
A distance of 5K equals to 3.1 miles, so measure it off and record your time. You may download an app to your smartphone which will record the time for you. The name of the app is IYR Virtual. You may also run or walk the distance on a treadmill. Once you have completed your run or walk, go to the butterfly5k.itsyourrace.com website and record your time. Race times MUST be logged in by 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Participants in the Run will receive a t-shirt with the 2020 Virtual logo. The shirt will be fluorescent orange this year. Participants will also receive a participation medal. First, second, and third place awards will also be given.
Those who do not want to participate in the Run but who are registered will receive a t-shirt.  There will be no extra shirts ordered this year for later sale, so if you want a shirt, when you register, mark “I am sleeping in” on the form. This will guarantee you a shirt. Everyone who registers will get a t-shirt. The shirts will be ready approximately two weeks after the Run. Local shirts and medals will be delivered by the Foundation, and out-of-town shirts will be mailed along with the medals earned.
If you have any questions concerning the Run, contact Jim Beavers, Race Master, at 931-722-3658 or email him at beaverslumber@gmail.com.
