Another week of Wayne County High School basketball saw the Wildcats fall to the Frank Hughes Lions in overtime and then lose to the Summertown Eagles. The Ladycats overpowered the Lady Lions of Frank Hughes on Tuesday, but then ran into a buzz saw on Friday as they lost to the Lady Eagles of Summertown. The teams now face Perry County on Friday, following hosting Collinwood Tuesday. Next week, they travel to Loretto on Tuesday and Frank Hughes on Friday. The Wildcats are now 3 – 11 on the year and 0 – 2 in district action. The Ladycats fall to 9 – 4 on the season and 1 – 1 in district play.
The Ladycats took control early on Tuesday night against the Lady Lions of Frank Hughes, going up 12 – 4 at the end of the first period as Henley Floyd, Savanna McClain, Michaela Gallian, and Kelley Baugus each scored 3 points in the opening period. They upped the lead to 32 – 10 by halftime and coasted to a 63 – 18 win as all the Ladycats saw action. Lauren Bryant, a freshman, came off the bench to lead the Ladycats in scoring, with 14 points, including 3 three-pointers. She also had 2 steals and an assist. Kelley Baugus also hit for double figures with 11 points. She had 2 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Henley Floyd and Michaela Gallian added 8 points each. Floyd had a rebound, a steal, and an assist, while Gallian had 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Savanna McClain finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist, and Cambree Camfield scored 5 points with a rebound, a steal, and an assist. Charli Woodside scored 3 points and had 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Sallie Bundrant, Lexie Lee, and Kelsey Carroll each scored 2 points. Bundrant had a steal and an assist, while Lee had a rebound, 2 steals, and an assist. Cimmie Willis added one point and a steal. The Ladycats shot 51% from the field and forced 34 Lady Lion turnovers.
The Wildcats got off to a good start against the Lions from Frank Hughes on Tuesday night as they took a 13 – 10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Wyatt Kelley and Tyler Moser each scored 4 points and Cade Crews had a big 3-pt play in the opening frame. In the second period, the ‘Cats saw the Lions put up 23 points, 11 of which came from the foul line, to fall behind 33 – 24 at the half. The ‘Cats fought back in the third, holding the Lions to only 3 points, while scoring 11 to trail by one after three periods of action. The fourth was evenly matched as the Wildcats tied the game to send it into overtime, tied at 53 all. Adam Goss hit for 7 points in the fourth quarter, and the Lions again went to the foul line, hitting 11 free throws in the quarter. The overtime period saw the same thing as 8 of the Lions’ 11 points were from the line as they took the win, 64 – 59.
Tyler Moser finished the game with 15 points to lead the ‘Cats. He had a double-double with 14 rebounds. Clay Baugus scored 14 points and had 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 8 assists. Adam Goss finished with 11 points with a rebound and a steal. Cade Crews scored 8 points and had 4 rebounds, a block, and an assist. Wyatt Kelley scored 6 points and had 2 steals. Ethan Camfield scored 3 points, a steal, and an assist. Gaynes Keaton had a big basket in the overtime period with a rebound. Austin Whitson had 4 rebounds. The Wildcats forced 20 Lion turnovers. They were called for 33 fouls. Frank Hughes went to the line 46 times in the game, converting 35. The Wildcats shot 17 free throws on the night.
The Ladycats got off to a very slow start against the Lady Eagles of Summertown on Friday night, committing numerous turnovers in the first quarter to find themselves down 18 – 9 at the end of the first period. They matched points in the second, but still trailed by 9 at the half. In the third, Summertown turned up the pressure, holding the Ladycats to only 5 points in the third, to up the lead to 40 – 22. The fourth was no better as the Lady Eagle pressure kept the Ladycats off balance as the Lady Eagles went on to take the win, 52 – 31.
Only four Ladycat players scored in the contest. Lexie Lee came off the bench to lead in scoring with 11 points. She had 3 rebounds. Michaela Gallian hit for 10 points and had 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Savanna McClain and Kelley Baugus each scored 5 points. McClain had 7 rebounds with an assist, and Baugus had a rebound, a steal, and 3 assists. Charli Woodside had a rebound, and Henley Floyd had a steal. The Ladycats committed 19 turnovers in the game and saw Summertown have 16 assists on 21 made baskets.
The Wildcats hung tough with the Eagles in the first quarter, trailing 19 – 12 at the end of the period. Summertown opened up to a double-digit lead by the half and went on to take a 76 – 32 win. The ‘Cats didn’t have a double-digit scorer on the night, but were led by Tyler Moser with 8 points and 6 rebounds. Clay Baugus scored 6 points, all in the first half, and had 5 rebounds, a steal, and an assist. Freshman Austin Whitson came off the bench to add 6 points and had 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Adam Goss hit for 4 points and had a rebound. Wyatt Kelley had 3 points with 5 rebounds and a steal. Braxton Butler hit a three-pointer and had a steal. Jesse Dixon scored 2 points and had a rebound. Ethan Camfield had a rebound, a steal, and 3 assists, while Cade Crews had a rebound, a block, and an assist. Gaynes Keaton had 3 rebounds, a steal, and 2 assists, and Eli McClain had 3 boards and a block. Dawson Willis had a steal. The Wildcats turned the ball over 39 times against the Summertown pressure, giving up 38 points on those turnovers.
