WCHS Wildcats Fall in Three, Ladycats Bring Home Wins

   A busy week of Wayne County High School basketball concluded with the Ladycats taking wins from Lewis County, Mt. Pleasant, and Richland. The Wildcats had a hard time putting points on the board and fell to the Panthers, Tigers, and Raiders. The teams had an open date on Tuesday before traveling to West Tennessee to take on Clarksburg on Friday the 13th. They return home on Tuesday the 16th to host Decatur/Riverside. 

   At Lewis County last Monday night, the Ladycats took a 12 – 8 lead after one quarter. In the second, they upped the margin to 10 by the half. Adding 9 to the margin in the third, the Ladycats went on to take the win, 54 – 37.  The Ladycats posted three players in double figures.   Michaela Gallian led the Ladycats with 12 points. She had 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist.  Kelley Baugus scored 11 points and had 5 boards, 3 steals, a block and 2 assists. Cambree Camfield also had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Lauren Bryant added 7 points and had a rebound, 3 assists, and a steal. Savanna McClain scored 6 points and had 5 rebounds.  Henley Floyd had a three pointer with a steal, and an assist, and Lexie Lee and Charli Woodside each scored 2 points. Lee had 2 boards, an assist, and a steal, and Woodside had 5 rebounds. The Ladycats shot 44.4% from the field and out rebounded the Lady Panthers 28 – 22.

   Against the Lewis County Panthers, the Wildcats found themselves down 30 – 12 at the half.  The deficit increased as the ‘Cats fell by the final of 66 – 34. No Wildcat scored in double figures.  They were led by Clay Baugus and Wyatt Kelley with 8 points each. Baugus had 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist, while Kelley had 3 boards and an assist. Ethan Camfield, Cade Crews, and Austin Whitson each scored 4 points. Camfield had a rebound, and Whitson had one with a steal.  Adam Goss and Carson Prater each scored 2 points and had one rebound each. Gaynes Keaton and Tyler Moser each scored one point. They each had a rebound and an assist apiece. Eli McClain had 2 rebounds, while Dawson Willis and Jesse Dixon each had a rebound.  The ‘Cats shot 28.8% from the field and were outrebounded 38 – 16.

   On Tuesday night, the Ladycats made easy work of the Mt. Pleasant Lady Tigers. The Ladycats jumped out to a 24 – 8 first quarter lead. They upped the margin to 39 – 16 by halftime and held Mt. Pleasant scoreless in the third. The Ladycats played all their bench in the fourth quarter and went on to take the win, 54 – 25. Kelley Baugus and Michaela Gallian led the Ladycats with 12 points each. Baugus had 2 boards, 5 steals, and 7 assists, while Gallian had 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Savanna McClain also hit for double figures with 10 points.  She had 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Cambree Camfield scored 8 points and had 5 rebounds and 3 steals, while Lexie Lee had 4 points with 3 boards and 3 steals. Lauren Bryant and Jamie Lauren Hickman each hit a three-pointer. Bryant had 2 rebounds, a steal, and 4 assists, while Hickman had 2 rebounds. Kelsey Carroll had a basket, a rebound, and a steal. Henley Floyd had a rebound, 3 steals, and an assist. Celia Powell and Lauren Prater each had a rebound.  The Ladycats forced 25 Lady Tiger turnovers.

   The Wildcats and Mt. Pleasant Tigers both got off to a slow start Tuesday night with the first quarter score being 5 – 2 in favor of the Tigers. Mt. Pleasant outscored the ‘Cats 20 – 8 in the second to go up 25 – 10 by the half. The ‘Cats kept pace in the second half, but dropped the game 46 – 30. Clay Baugus and Tyler Moser led the ‘Cats in scoring with 13 and 10 points respectively. Baugus had 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist, while Moser had a double-double with 11 rebounds. He also had a steal. Braxton Butler hit a three-pointer, and Ethan Camfield and Gaynes Keaton each scored 2 points. Camfield had 2 rebounds and an assist, and Keaton had 4 boards and an assist. Cade Crews had 3 rebounds, and Adam Goss had 2 boards and an assist.  Wyatt Kelley had 2 rebounds, a block, and an assist. Eli McClain had 4 rebounds, and Austin Whitson had one. The Wildcats suffered 21 turnovers and shot only 29.3% from the field.  They won the rebounding battle 35 – 28. 

   The Ladycats came out sluggishly in the first quarter against the Lady Raiders of Richland on Friday night. Kelley Baugus was the only Ladycat that could put the ball in the basket in the first period as they were outscored 17 – 8. She hit a pair of three pointers in the quarter and scored all 8 points. In the second, the lead increased to double-digits as they went down 28 – 15 by the half.  In the third, the Ladycats trailed as much as 17 points before turning up the defensive pressure on the press. They cut the margin to 12, 39 – 27, by the end of the quarter. In the fourth, the pressure got to the Lady Raiders, as Lauren Bryant made a basket to cut the margin to 11, 42 – 31.   Michaela Gallian made a basket then came up with a steal and scored again to cut the lead to 42 – 35. Richland hit a 3 to make it 45 – 35, but Cambree Camfield answered to make it 45 – 38.  Another steal and basket by Lauren Bryant made it 47 – 42. A Kelley Baugus 3 put the margin to 2, 47 – 45, with 2:30 left in the contest. Cambree Camfield tied the game at 47 all with a basket.  The Ladycats forced another Richland turnover. Another Lauren Bryant steal and another 3 by Camfield gave the Ladycats the lead, 50 – 47, Richland missed a free throw with 30.4 seconds and fouled. The Ladycats missed their front end of the one and one. Richland rushed ot take a shot and missed. Michaela Gallian grabbed the board and got fouled. She hit the two free throws to make it 52 – 47 with seven seconds left. The Lady Raiders hit a three at the buzzer to make the final score 42 – 50.

   Kelley Baugus led the Ladycats with 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Lauren Bryant with 13 points. Baugus had 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Bryant had 4 rebounds, 5 key steals, and 2 assists. Cambree Camfield had 8 big 4th quarter points with a rebound.  Michaela Gallian also finished with 8 points and had 8 rebounds, 2 steals, a block, and 3 assists.  Savanna McClain scored 5 points and had 3 boards, and Lexie Lee had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and a steal. Henley Floyd had a rebound, 2 steals, and an assist, and Charli Woodside had a rebound and a steal. The Ladycats forced 16 Lady Raider turnovers and shot only 35% from the field.

   The Wildcats trailed by double-digits, 14 – 4, at the end of the first period, and cut the margin to 24 – 16 by the half. In the third, Richland upped the lead to 39 – 24, and went on to take the 53 – 34 win. Clay Baugus led the scoring for the Wildcats with 14 points. He had 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Adam Goss added 6 points and had 2 rebounds and an assist. Tyler Moser scored 4 points and had 3 rebounds and a steal. Braxton Butler, Ethan Camfield, and Cade Crews each scored 3 points. Butler had an assist, while Camfield had a rebound. Crews had 2 rebounds and an assist.  Eli McClain rounded out the scoring with one point and had a rebound. Gaynes Keaton had a rebound and a steal, and Austin Whitson had a rebound. The ‘Cats committed 26 turnovers and shot only 33% from the line.

   The Ladycats now stand at 5 – 1 on the year, while the ‘Cats are 2 – 5 on the season. They play at Clarksburg on Friday before finally coming home again on Tuesday night. Game time is 6:00 p.m. “WORK HARD ‘CATS AND LADYCATS!”—-Submitted
