Michael Joe LeFan was a quiet man who loved his family more than anything else in the world. After enduring an abusive childhood, he quit school at age 16 and worked two jobs to support himself and his single mother. Even after being diagnosed with PTSD several years ago, he was still a great dad to his four kids, and a loving husband to his wife DeNeal.

Michael Joe was tragically murdered on August 7th, 2019. In order to keep his legacy alive, and to bring something good out of his tragic death, DeNeal LeFan has established the Michael Joe LeFan Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund has already been able to give money to two 2020 Collinwood High School graduates, Kayla Potete and Noah Sanderson. Money from the fund has also been used to purchase furnishings for a bedroom at the Women’s Gateway House in Waynesboro. DeNeal says that she hopes the fund will continue to grow so that more scholarships may be given to Wayne County students, and so that other worthy projects in Wayne County can be given funding as well.

The first official fundraiser for the Michael Joe LeFan Memorial Scholarship Fund will be the 1st Annual Turkey Trot 5K, which will be held on Saturday, November 14th, 2020. The 5K will be both in person and virtual to accommodate those who want to participate in person and those who prefer to compete virtually. Registration will be from 7:00 – 7:45 a.m. on the day of the run, or you may pre-register at michaeljoelefan5k.itsyourrace.com. The race will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Collinwood High School, followed by a 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk. Go to the link above for more information.
